| When a new concept comes along, such as Simply Soft Eco, questions and concerns often arise, and rightly so. A yarn made in part from recyled clear plastic drinking bottles is a brand new—and exciting—idea! We have received questions about the safety of the NatureSpun® fiber used in Simply Soft Eco yarn. In order to answer those questions most efficiently, we've created a set of "frequently asked questions" specifically about safety concerns about Simply Soft Eco.
Please take a moment to read these FAQs. If your question is not answered here, please take a moment to send an email to public_relations@caron.com. We encourage your questions so that we may assure you that Simply Soft Eco yarn is clean, safe and good for the environment.
Q: I've heard that the government is limiting the amount of something called "phthalates" in consumer products, particularly if they are products that children might come in contact with. Do the recycled plastic bottles used to create the NatureSpun fiber contain phthalates?
A: No. Caron’s Simply Soft Eco yarn contains recycled fiber made from “PET” plastic beverage bottles. These are the same spring water bottles and carbonated beverage bottles that we purchase and use frequently in our daily lives. These bottles are shredded, disinfected and thoroughly washed to ensure purity and safety. It is important to note that since these bottles are made from “PET,” they do not require the use of phthalates in their manufacturing. We want our customers to know that the recycled polyester fiber used in Caron’s Simply Soft Eco does not contain any of the phthalates currently being regulated by the CPSIA legislation.
Q: Is the fiber made from recycled drinking water bottles clean?
A: Yes. The fiber begins as bottles are shredded into flakes, thoroughly washed and rinsed, and then exposed to temperatures of more than 500 degrees to convert the bottle flakes into a textile fiber. This also serves to completely eliminate any contaminents whatsoever. Once in fiber form, the recycled polyester is as safe as the recycled plastic bottle from which it was made.
Q: Will the fiber cause an allergic reaction against the skin, particularly a baby's skin?
A: We cannot predict whether or not any fiber will cause an allergic reaction in a person. However, Simply Soft Eco would not be any more likely to cause an allergic reaction than a plastic bottle or our traditional Simply Soft yarn.
Q: What other kinds of products use this fiber?
A: This same fiber is used in cotton/polyester sweaters and socks, auto upholstery and floor coverings.
