Purse measures approximately 10"/25.5 cm high (not drawn closed) x 7"/18 cm wide

 

MATERIALS

Caron International's Black Magic (50% acrylic, 50% wool; 1.76 oz/50 g, 59 yds/54 m ball): #0006 Blue Green, 4 balls (A)

Caron International's Simply Soft Quick (100% acrylic; 3 oz/85 g, 50 yds/46 m skein):

#0016 Black, 3 balls (B)

Caron International's Simply Soft (100% acrylic; 6 oz/170 g, 315 yds/288 m skein):

#9705 Sage, 1 skein (C)

#9710 Country Blue, 1 skein (D)

One size US H-8 (5 mm), crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Yarn needle

4 D-rings

2 large glass beads

 

GAUGE

In half double crochet, using H-8 (5 mm) hook, 10 sts and 6 rows = 4"/10 cm

SPECIAL TERM

hdc2tog: Half double crochet 2 together – [Yarn over, insert hook in next st and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through 5 loops on hook.

 

NOTES

1) Purse is made in four pieces. First two Sides are worked and joined at the lower edges (at base of Purse). The Front and Back are then worked between the side pieces.

 

SIDE (make 2)

With A, ch 4.

Foundation Round: 11 dc in fourth ch from hook); join with slip st in top of beginning ch, do not turn—11 dc.

Row 1: Ch 17, hdc in third ch from hook and in next 14 ch; 2 hdc in next 11 dc around; working in free loops along opposite side of beginning ch, hdc in next 15 ch; do not join, turn—52 hdc

Row 2 (RS): Ch 2, working in back loops only, hdc in each st across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in next 15 sts, 2 hdc in next 22 sts, hdc in next 15 sts, turn—74 hdc.

Row 4: Ch 2, working in back loops only, hdc in each st across, turn.

Note: The narrower end is the top edge of the Side, the wider end is the lower edge.

Fasten off. After completing two sides, join sides together at lower edges as follows: hold sides with RS facing together, and working through both thicknesses, join A with sc in 35th st of last row of Side facing you; work 5 more sc across. Fasten off.

 

FRONT

With RS facing, hold joined Sides to work along one long edge. Join B with sc in back loop of first st of long edge.

Row 1: Working in back loops only, sc in next 14 sts, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * once more, sc in next 8 sts (skipping seam between Sides), **2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts; repeat from ** once more, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 15 sts, turn—74 sc.

Rows 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each st across.

Fasten off. With RS facing, join A with sc in back loop of first st of last row.

Row 5: Working in back loops only, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 6: Ch 2, hdc in first 15 sts, hdc2tog 22 times, hdc in last 15 sts, turn—52 hdc.

Row 7: Ch 2, working in back loops only, hdc in first 15 sts, hdc2tog 11 times, hdc in last 15 sts, turn—41 hdc.

Row 8: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn.

Row 9: Ch 2, working in back loops only, hdc in first 15 sts, hdc2tog 5 times, hdc in last 16 sts, turn—36 hdc.

Hold Row 9 so that the first 18 sts align with the last 18 sts. Join edges of Row 9 as follows; ch 1, working along WS through both thicknesses, sc in each st across. Fasten off.

 

BACK

Along opposite long edge of joined Sides, work as for Front. Fasten off.

 

FINISHING

With RS facing, join A with sc in top edge of purse.

Round 1: Working in ends of rows, work sc evenly spaced around top edge of purse; skip the ends of B rows, pulling them to the outside of the purse (the handles will be attached here). Ensure that you work an even number of sts; join with slip st in first sc, turn.

Round 2: Ch 2, hdc in each st around; join with slip st in first hdc, turn.

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, *ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st; repeat from * around, ch 1, skip last st; join with slip st in first sc, turn.

Round 4: Ch 2, hdc in each st and ch-1 space around; join with slip st in first hdc, turn.

Round 5: Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in same st as join, ch 2, sc in second ch from hook (picot made), *skip next st, sc in next st, ch 2, sc in second ch from hook; repeat from * around; skip last st, join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.

 

Embroidery

Using yarn needle and C, whipstitch along one side of each B section. Using yarn needle and D, whipstitch along the other side of each B section. Angle C and D stitches in opposite directions.

 

Handle (make 2)

With B, ch 81.

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—80 sc.

Rows 2 and 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Fold Handle lengthwise. Working through both thicknesses, work a row of sc across long edges of Handle to form a tube. Fasten off. Using yarn needle and C, whipstitch along one side of Handle. With D, whipstitch along other side of Handle. Angle C and D stitches in opposite directions.

 

Drawstring

With B, work chain sts until you have a 35"/89 cm length. Fasten off.

 

Assembly

Using yarn needle and B, whipstitch flat edge of D rings to top of each B stripe at top of purse. Whipstitch handles to round edge of D rings. Weave Drawstring in and out of spaces created by Round 3 of top edging. Thread a bead on each end of the drawstring an
