TECHNIQUE USED: Crochet

 

 

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Spider Body measures approximately 5"/12.5 cm wide by 12"/30.5 cm long

Legs measure approximately 12"/30.5 cm long

 

MATERIALS

Caron International's Glimmer (85% acrylic, 15% polyester; 1.76 oz/50 g, 49 yds/45 m ball):

#0020 Black (MC), 3 balls

#0008 Apple (A), 1 ball (small amount used for eyes)

One crochet hook size US J-10 (6 mm), or size to obtain gauge

Polyester fiberfill

Stitch markers

Yarn needle

8 pipe cleaners or florist wires (optional)

 

GAUGE
Gauge is not critical for this project.


SPECIAL TERM

sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together – Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, (two loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through all three loops on hook.

NOTES

  • Work stitches tightly so that the stuffing will not show through.
  • Spider is worked in the round; the rounds are not joined. Place a marker at end of round and move up each round.

 

SPIDER BODY

Using MC, chain 4; join with a slip st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in ring; do not join, place a marker for end of round.

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around—16 sc.

Rnd 3: * Sc in next 8 sts, place a marker to indicate bottom side; work [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] twice—20 sc.

Rnd 4: Sc in next 8 sts, work 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, work 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, work 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, work 2 sc in next st—24 sc.

Rnds 5 and 6: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 7: Sc in next 9 sts, work 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, work 2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, work 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, work 2 sc in next st, sc in last st—28 sc.

Rnds 8 and 9: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 16: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 17: Sc in next 9 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog, sc in last st—24 sts rem.

Rnd 18: Sc in next 8 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog—20 sts rem.

Rnd 19: Sc in next 8 sts, [sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog] twice—16 sts rem.

Begin firmly stuffing spider, and continue to stuff as you go.

Rnd 22: Work 2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts, work 2 sc in next 2 sts, sc in next 6 sts, work 2 sc in last st—20 sc.

Rnd 23: Work 2 sc in next st, sc in next 8 sts, work 2 sc in next 2 sts, sc in next 8 sts, work 2 sc in last st—24 sc.

Rnd 24: Work 2 sc in next st, sc in next 10 sts, work 2 sc in next 2 sts, sc in next 10 sts, work 2 sc in last st—28 sc.

Rnds 25 – 30: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 31: Sc2tog, sc in next 10 sts, [sc2tog] twice, sc in next 10 sts, sc2tog—24 sts rem.

Rnd 32: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 33: Sc2tog, sc in next 8 sts, [sc2tog] twice, sc in next 8 sts, sc2tog—20 sts rem.

Rnd 34: [Sc2tog] around—10 sts rem.

Rnd 35: [Sc2tog, sc in next sc, sc2tog] twice—6 sts rem.

Rnd 36: Sc2tog, skip 1 st, slip st in next st; leave remaining sts unworked.

Fasten off.

Complete stuffing and sew end closed.

 

LONG LEGS (make 4)

Using MC, chain 6; join with slip st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Sc in each ch around; do not join; place a marker for end of round—6 sc.

Rnd 2: Work [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] twice—8 sc.

Rnd 3: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 4: [Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts] twice—6 sts rem.

Rnds 5 – 37: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 38: Sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts—5 sts rem.

Rnd 39: Sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts—4 sts rem.

Rnd 40: Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts—3 sts rem.

Rnd 41: Ch 2, slip st in second ch from hook, slip st in next st; leave remaining sts unworked.

Fasten off.

 

SHORT LEGS (make 4)

Rnds 1 – 30: Work as for Long legs.

Rnds 31 – 34: Work Rnds 38 – 41 of Long legs.

 

MANDIBLES (make 2)

Using MC, chain 6; join with slip st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Sc in each ch around—6 sc.

Rnd 2: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 3: [Sc2tog, sc in next st] twice—4 sts rem.

Rnd 4: [Sc2tog] twice—2 sts rem.

Fasten off.

 

EYES (make 2)

Using A, chain 2.

Rnd 1: Work 5 sc in second ch from hook; join with slip st in first sc.

Fasten off.

 

FINISHING

  • With the flat side of the Spider as the bottom, using yarn needle and MC, sew one Long Leg, 2 Short Legs, and one Long Leg on each side of Spider Body (see photo).
  • Slide a pipe cleaner or florist’s wire into each leg to help the legs hold their shape. NOTE: Do NOT use pipe cleaners or wire if Spider is going to be played with by a small child.
  • Using yarn needle and MC, sew mandibles on the end of the spider as shown in photo. Sew eyes above the mandibles.

Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
