SPECIAL STITCHES

sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together—Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

NOTE: All decreasing occurs in sc sections. Seed st sections should always have an even number of sts.

SCARF HAT

Ribbing (worked sideways)

With smaller hook and MC, ch 8 (9).

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—7 (8) sc.

Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each sc across, turn. 

Rep Row 2 until piece measures 17 (19 1/2)” from beginning, ending with a RS row. Fasten off leaving a sewing length.

With yarn needle and sewing length, sew ends together to form a tube.

First Section (sc)

Rnd 1 (RS): With smaller hook, join CC in any st on either side edge of tube, ch 1, work 56 (62) sc evenly spaced around; change to larger hook and join with sl st in first sc—56 (62) sc.

Rnd 2: With larger hook, ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc.

Rep Rnd 2 until piece measures 4 1/2 (5)”/11.5 (12.5)cm from beginning of first section. Fasten off CC, join MC with sl st in first st.

Second Section (seed st)

Rnd 1: With MC, ch 1, sc in first sc, dc in next sc, *sc in next sc, dc in next sc; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc—28 sc; 28 dc.

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc),*sc in dc, dc in sc*; rep from * around, ending with sc in last dc; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3—28 sc; 28 dc.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, dc in next sc, *sc in next dc, dc in next sc; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc—28 sc; 28 dc.

Rep Rnds 2-3 until section measures 3”/7.5cm from beginning. Fasten off MC, join CC with sl st in first st.

With CC, work even in sc rnds until section measures 2”/5cm from beginning.

Next Rnd: Ch 1,*sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next 11 sts; rep from * 3 times, sc in last 0 (6) sc; join with sl st in first sc—48 (54) sc.

With CC, work even in sc rnds until section measures 2 1/2”/6.5cm from beginning. Fasten off CC, join MC with sl st in first st.

Fourth Section (seed st)

Rep Second Section, working on 48 (54) sts. Fasten off MC, join CC with sl st in first st.

Fifth Section (sc)

Rnd 1: With CC, ch 1,*sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next 10 sts; rep from * 3 times, sc in last 0 (6) sc; join with sl st in first sc—44 (50) sc.

With CC, work even in sc rnds until section measures 2”/5cm from beginning.

Last Rnd: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc—10 (10) sc. Fasten off CC leaving a sewing length.

FINISHING

With yarn needle, and sewing length, weave yarn through sts of last rnd, gather tightly and secure. With A, make a 3”/7.5cm pompom and attach to tip of hat. Weave in ends.
