MATERIALS:
Caron International’s Simply Soft Quick yarn (100% acrylic; 2½ oz/70.9g, approx 100 yds/92m):
3 (3, 4, 4) skeins in #1 white (MC)
2 (2, 2, 3) skeins in #9 Orchid (CC)
Size US 9 (5.5mm) knitting needles (for ribbing); size US 9 (5.5mm) circular needle, 24" (60cm) long (for Front bands and Hood edging)
Stitch markers; crochet hook size H/8 (5mm); tapestry needle (tn)
4 (4, 4, 5) ¾" diameter buttons.
Size US 11 (8 mm) knitting needles, or size to obtain gauge

 

GAUGE
Using size 11 (8 mm) needles, in St st: 12 sts and 16 rows = 4"/10cm
TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

 

STITCHES USED
Stockinette stitch (over an even number of stitches)
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2: Purl. 
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for St st.
1x1 Ribbing (multiple of 2 sts + 1; 2-row repeat)
Row 1 (RS): * K1, p1; rep from * across, end k1.
Row 2 (WS): *P1, k1; rep from * across, end p1.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 for 1x1 rib.

 

BACK
Using smaller needles and CC, CO 33 (37, 39, 43) sts; beg 1x1 rib. Work even for 2 rows. 
Change to MC; work even for 2 rows.
Change to larger needles and St st; work even until piece measures 6 (6, 6 1/2, 8)" from the beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Armhole: (RS) BO 3 (3, 3, 4) sts beg next 2 rows—27 (31, 33, 35) sts rem.
(RS) Dec 1 st ea side every other row 2 (3, 3, 3) times: 23 (25, 27, 29) sts.  Work even until armhole measures 5 (6, 6 1/2, 7)", end with a WS row.
Shape Shoulders and Neck: (RS) BO 4 (5, 6, 7) sts at beg next 2 rows—13 (15, 15, 15) sts rem for neck. BO rem sts.

 

LEFT FRONT
Using smaller needles and CC, CO 15 (17, 19, 21) sts; beg 1x1 rib.
Work as for Back, shaping armhole at beg of RS rows, until armhole measures 2 1/2 (3 1/2, 4, 4 1/2)" from beg of shaping, end with a RS row—10 (11, 13, 14) sts rem. 
Shape Neck: (WS) At neck edge, BO 4 (4, 5, 5) sts, work to end; work 1 row even.
(WS) Dec 1 st at neck edge every other row twice—4 (5, 6, 7) sts rem for shoulder. Work even until armhole measures same as Back to shoulder, end with a WS row. 
Shape Shoulder: (RS) As for Back.

 

RIGHT FRONT
Work as for Left Front, reversing all shaping.

 

HOOD
Using larger needles and CC, CO 16 (17, 18, 18) sts; beg St st. Work even for 5 rows, end with a WS row.
Shape Center Back: (RS) Inc 1 st at center Back (beg of RS rows) this row, then every 6 rows 4 (5, 5, 5) times—21 (23, 24, 24) sts; pm at beg of last inc row.
Top of Hood: Work even until piece meas 9 (10, 10 1/2, 11)” from beg, end with a WS row; pm at each side for fold line at top of Hood. Cont in St st, work even until piece measures same as first side from fold line to marker for last inc, end with a WS row.
Shape Center Back: (RS) Dec 1 st at center Back this row, then every 6 rows 4 (5, 5, 5) times—16 (17, 18, 18) sts rem. Work even until piece meas 9 (10, 10 1/2, 11)” from fold line marker; BO all sts.

 

FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams.
Armhole Edging: With RS facing, using smaller needles and MC, pick up and knit 35 (45, 49, 53) sts around armhole edge; beg 1x1 rib. Work even for 2 rows.  Change to CC and work even for 2 rows. BO all sts loosely in rib. 
Sew side seams, including armhole rib. 
Hood: With right sides facing, fold Hood along fold line; sew center back seam, matching shaping.  With right sides facing, sew Hood to neck edge, placing seam at center Back of neck.
Front Bands and Hood Edging: With RS facing, using circular needle and MC, beg lower right Front edge, pick up and knit 105 (117, 127, 141) sts up right Front, around Hood and down left Front; beg 1x1 rib. Work even for 2 rows, end with a RS row.  Place markers along right Front edge for 4 (4, 4, 5) buttonholes, first centered on ribbing at lower edge, last 1/2" from neck shaping, rem 2 (2, 2, 3) evenly spaced between.
Buttonholes: (WS) Cont in 1x1 rib, work buttonholes opposite markers as follows:
Work to first marker, [yo, k2tog for buttonhole]; cont in rib as est, work buttonholes opposite rem markers, work to end.
Change to CC; cont in rib as est, work even for 2 rows, working yo's in pattern as you come to them.  BO all sts loosely in rib.
Weave in ends.
Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
Flower Trim: Using CC, cut a piece 30" long; loop into a flower shape (see photo).  Sew flower to upper left Front of vest.  Using MC, make a French knot and attach it to the center of the flower, through all thicknesses.

Care Instructions: Machine Wash: warm water, gentle cycle. Machine Dry: low heat, delicate cycle.
