Caron International's Simply Soft Shadows

(100% acrylic; ) #0004 Autumn, 27 (27, 30, 30, 33) oz/764(764, 849, 849, 934)g

Note: Extra yarn is allowed to match color changes.

One pair US size 8 (5 mm) needles or size to obtain gauge

8 buttons

4 large snaps

2 stitch holders

Crochet hook H-8 (5 mm)

GAUGE

In Stocinette stitch, using US size 8 needles, 17 sts and 23 rows = 4”/10 cm

In Seed stitch, using US size 8 needles, 17 sts and 27 rows = 4"/10 cm

Seed st

Row 1: *K1, p1; repeat from * to end.

Row 2: *P1, k1; repeat from * to end.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 for Seed st.

Helpful Hint: Yarn has subtle self stripes. In order to match stripes, start fronts and sleeves at same color section. Stripes will not match at side seams.


BACK

Using size 8 needles, cast on 85 (93, 102, 110, 119) sts.

Hem: Work even in St st for 7 rows.

Turning ridge row: K sts in next row through back loops.

Work in St st for 1 1/2 (1 1/2, 1 1/2, 1 1/2, 2)".

Side Shaping

Dec 1 st each side next row, then every foll 23 (29, 24, 31, 25) rows 5 (4, 5, 4, 5) times -- 73 (83, 90, 100, 107) sts.

Work even until piece measures 26 1/2 (26 1/2, 27 1/2, 28, 28 1/2)” from beginning, end with a WS row.

Shape Armholes

Bind off 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st each side every other row 4 (7, 8, 10, 11) times -– 57 (61, 64, 70, 73) sts.

Work even until armhole measures 8 (8 1/2, 8 1/2, 9, 9 1/2)”, end with a WS row.

Shape Shoulders

Bind off 8 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts at beginning of next 2 rows, 9 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts at beginning of foll 2 rows, then 0 (6, 6, 7, 8) sts at beginning of  foll 2 rows.

Bind off remaining 23 (25, 28, 28, 29) sts for back neck.

 

LEFT FRONT

Using size 8 needles, cast on 53 (57, 62, 66, 70) sts.

Work hem and turning ridge same as back.

Work as for back, shaping at side edge only (at beginning of RS rows), until piece measures 7 (8, 9, 10, 11)" or desired distance from bottom to start of vertical pocket.

Vertical Pocket

Work to pocket opening on the left side of piece, place next 15 sts on a holder.

Continue in St st on these sts for 5", working a Seed st border of 8 sts at the pocket edge.

Place sts on holder.

Start back at first holder and work the side sts and pocket lining by joining a second ball of yarn and with a cast on of 25 additional sts.

Work these sts until length is 5” or same as first half of the pocket.

Joining row: Work to pocket lining , knit the lining sts tog with the sts on the holder, then work to the end of the row.

Work in St st until piece measures same as back to armhole.

Shape Armhole

Bind off 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) sts at armhole edge once.

Dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row 4 (7, 8, 10, 11) times --- 39 (41, 43, 46, 47) sts.

Work even until armhole measures 5 1/2 (6 1/2, 6 1/2, 7, 7 1/2)", end with a WS row.

Shape Neck

(WS) BO 16 (16, 17, 17, 18) sts at beginning of row. 

Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 6 (7, 8, 8, 7) times - 17 (18, 18, 21, 22) sts.

Work even until armhole measures same as back.

Shape Shoulder

Bind off at armhole edge every other row 8 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts once, 9 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts once, then 0 (6, 6, 7, 8) sts once.

Measure and mark placement of 4 front edge buttons.

These 4 buttons will have corresponding buttonholes and the rem buttons will have snaps underneath.

The bottom button should be in the center of the empire waist belt.

 

RIGHT FRONT

Work as for left front, reversing position of pocket and all shaping; AT SAME TIME, work buttonholes opposite markers as follows:

Row 1: Work 4 sts from front edge and bind off next 4 sts for buttonhole, finish row.

Row 2: Work to bind off sts, cast on 4 sts using single cast on  method, finish row

Row 3: Work across row working sts of buttonhole through back loops to tighten them.

 

SLEEVES

Using size 8 needles, cast on 53 (58, 63, 66, 70) sts.

Work hem and turning ridge same as back.

Work in St st until sleeve measures 18 1/2 (19 , 19, 19, 19 1/2)” from beginning, end with a WS row.

Shape Cap

Bind off 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st each side every row 0 (1, 1, 2, 1) time(s), every other row 7 (15, 16, 15, 17) times, every 3 (1, 1, 1, 1) row(s) 2 (1, 1, 2, 1) time(s), then every other row 6 (0, 0, 0, 0) times.

Bind off remaining 15 (16, 17, 18, 20) sts loosely.

 

BELT

Using size 8 needles, cast on 166 (182, 200, 216, 234) sts.

Work in Seed st for 1 1/4".

Make a 4-st button hole as on Right Front.

Work even until belt measures 2 1/2" from beginning.

Bind off.

 

FINISHING

Block pieces to measurements.

Sew shoulder seams. Set in sleeves; sew sleeve and side seams.

Fold hems to inside and tack in place.

Try on coat and pin belt in place matching bottom buttonhole on garment to buttonhole on belt.

(Belt should be in empire position; will need to be stretched slightly to fit.)

Tack in place with invisible sts. Tack buttonholes tog at belt and bottom front edge.

Work 2 rows sc evenly on fronts and around neckline, end join with a slip st to first sc.

Sew on buttons. Sew on snaps under 4 side buttons

Weave in ends and steam lightly.
