One size US K-10.5 (6.5mm) crochet hook, or size to obtain gauge.

5 buttons or beads—5/8"/16mm diameter

GAUGE

In single crochet, 12 sts and 12 rows = 4"/10cm.

 

STITCHES USED

Chain (ch), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st)

 

SPECIAL TERM

rev sc (reverse single crochet)—Work single crochet in opposite direction by inserting hook in next stitch (to the right if right-handed, and to the left if left-handed), yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

 

NOTES

1. Hat is worked holding 2 strands of yarn together throughout.

2. Hat is worked in continuous rounds; do not join and do not turn at beginning of rounds.

 

HAT

Holding 2 strands of yarn together, ch 2.

Round 1 (RS): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join—6 sc. Place marker to indicate beginning of round. Move marker up as each round is completed.

Round 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around—12 sc.

Round 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times—18 sc.

Round 4: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc] 6 times—24 sc.

Round 5: [Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times—30 sc.

Round 6: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc] 6 times—36 sc.

Round 7: [Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times—42 sc.

Round 8: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc] 6 times—48 sc.

Round 9: [Sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times—54 sc.

Round 10: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc] 6 times—60 sc.

Round 11: [Sc in next 29, 2 sc in next sc] 2 times—62 sc.

Round 12: Working in back loops only, sc in each sc around.

Do not fasten off.

Visor

Note: Visor is worked back and forth in rows. You may find it helpful to place a stitch marker in the first and last sl st of the first row, and move the markers up as work progresses.

Row 1 (RS): Sl st in next sc, sc in next 22 sc, sl st in next sc; leave remaining sts unworked, turn—22 sc with a sl st at each end.

Row 2: Ch 1, sk sl st, sl st in next sc, sc in next 20 sc, sl st in last sc, turn—20 sc with a sl st at each end.

Row 3: Ch 1, sk sl st, sl st in next sc, [sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 2 times, sc in next 6 sc, sl st in last sc, turn—20 sc with a sl st at each end.

Row 4: Ch 1, sk sl st, sl st in next sc, sc in next 18 sc, sl st in last sc, turn—18 sc with a sl st at each end.

Row 5: Ch 1, sk sl st, sl st in next sc, sc in next 16 sc, sl st in last sc, turn—16 sc with a sl st at each end.

Row 6: Ch 1, sk sl st, sl st in next sc, sc in next 14 sc, sl st in last sc, turn—14 sc with a sl st at each end.

Row 7: Ch 1, sk sl st, sl st in next sc, sc in next 12 sc, sl st in last sc, turn—12 sc with a sl st at each end.

Last Round: With RS facing, working in ends of rows of visor, sl st evenly across ends of rows to last round of hat (Round 22) to the next unworked sc following the sl st; work rev sc evenly around edge of hat and visor; join with sl st in first rev sc. Fasten off.

 

FINISHING

Weave in ends. Block lightly, if needed. Sew buttons (or beads), evenly spaced on Round 22, above the visor.
