GAUGE
Gauge is not critical for this project; squares shown measure 8"/20 cm
STITCHES USED
Chain (ch): Begin by making a slip knot on your hook. * Wrap the yarn
around the hook (yarn over) and pull up a loop, [draw the yarn through
the loop on the hook to form the first chain]. Repeat from * for number of
chains required. Note: The loop on the hook is not included when
counting the number of chains.
Double Crochet (dc): Yarn over hook, insert hook into stitch indicated,
yarn over and pull up a loop, [yarn over and draw through two loops on
hook] twice.
Half Double Crochet (hdc): Yarn over hook, insert hook into stitch
indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through all
three loops on hook.
Single Crochet (sc): Insert hook in stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up
a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.
Slip Stitch (slip st): Insert hook in the stitch indicated, yarn over and
draw through both the stitch and the loop on the hook.
Shell: Work [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] all in same space.
NOTES
Afghan is worked using 2 strands of yarn throughout.
J
oin rounds with a slip st in stitch indicated.
Assemble squares as shown on diagram, or as desired.
SQUARE (make 48 – 12 in each color)
Using a double strand of appropriate color, chain 4; join with a slip st to
form a ring.
Round 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), work 15 dc
in ring, join in top of beginning ch—16 dc.
Round 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1) * dc in next dc, ch 1; repeat from *
around, join in third ch of beginning ch-4.
Round 3: Slip st in first ch-1 space, ch 3, work [dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in same
space (first corner shell made), ch 1, hdc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, sc in
next ch-1 space, ch 1, hdc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, * work shell in next
ch-1 space, ch 1, hdc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, sc in next ch-1 space, ch
1, hdc in next ch-1 space, ch 1; repeat from * around, join to first dc.
Round 4: Slip st in next dc and in first ch-2 space, ch 3, work [dc, ch 2,
2 dc] in same space (first corner shell), ch 2, [hdc in next ch-1 space, ch
2] 4 times, * work shell in ch-2 space of next shell, ch 2, [hdc in next ch-1
space, ch 2] 4 times; repeat from * around, join to first dc.
Round 5: Slip st in next dc and in first ch-2 space, ch 3, work [dc, ch 2, 2
dc] in same space (first corner shell), [work 2 dc in next ch-2 space] 5
times, * work shell in ch-2 space of next shell, [work 2 dc in next ch-2
space] 5 times; repeat from * around, join to first dc.
Fasten off; using yarn needle, weave in all ends.
ASSEMBLY
Referring to diagram, lay squares on a flat surface. Using yarn needle
and a double strand of yarn, join completed squares into 6 strips of 8, then join strips together as follows:
With RS's together, working in back loops only, join pieces using
whipstitch.
Border: With RS facing, join a double strand of D with a slip st in any
corner ch-2 space.
Round1: Ch 1, work 3 sc in same st, * sc in next 14 sts, [sc between
squares, sc in next 14 sts] across to next corner, work 3 sc in corner;
repeat from * 2 times, sc in next 14 sts [sc between squares, sc in next
14 sts] to beginning, join to first sc.
Round 2: Ch 2, working in back loops only, hdc in each sc around, join in
second ch of beginning ch-2.
Fasten off.
Using yarn needle, weave in remaining ends.
