One size US H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook, or size to obtain gauge

Yarn needle


GAUGE

In half double crochet, using H-8 (5 mm) hook, 15 sts and 11 rows = 4"/10 cm

SPECIAL TERM

hdc2tog: Half double crochet 2 together—[Yarn over, insert hook in next st and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through 5 loops on hook.


BACK

With MC, chain 37 (42).

Row 1: Hdc in third ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—35 (40) sts.

Rows 2–7 (9): Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn.

Rows 8 (10)–11 (13): Ch 2, hdc in each st to last 2 sts, hdc2tog, turn—31 (36) sts.

Rows 12 (14)–19 (22): Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn.

Fasten off leaving a 12"/30.5 cm tail for seaming.


FRONT (make 2)

With MC, chain 19 (21).

Row 1: Hdc in third ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—17 (19) sts.

Rows 2–7 (9): Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn.

Row 8 (10): Ch 2, hdc in each st to last 2 sts, hdc2tog, turn—16 (18) sts.

Rows 9 (11)–13 (16): Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn.

Row 14 (17): Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in each st across, turn—15 (17) sts.

Row 15 (18): Repeat Row 10—14 (16) sts.

With MC, chain 4; join with slip st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 2, work 8 hdc in ring; join with slip st in first hdc—8 sts.

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around; join with slip st in first hdc—16 sts.

Round 3: Ch 2, [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st] 8 times; join with slip st in first hdc—24 sts.

Round 4: Ch 2, [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts] 8 times; join with slip st in first hdc—32 sts.

Round 5: Ch 2, [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 3 sts] 8 times; join with slip st in first hdc—40 sts.

Round 6: Ch 2, [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 4 sts] 8 times; join with slip st in first hdc—48 sts.

Shape Sides and Back

Rows 11–20: Ch 2, hdc in next 42 (48) sts, turn.

Do not fasten off.

First Tie

Rows 1–25: Ch 2, hdc in next 4 sts, turn.

Fasten off.

Second Tie

Join MC to opposite corner of side of hat, make second tie in same manner as first.


PEOPLE (make 8 – 6 for Cardigan, 2 for Hat)

With A or B, chain 3.

Round 1 (face): 5 hdc in third ch from hook; join with slip st in first hdc. Fasten off.

Round 2 (head): Join C with slip st in any st of face, ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around face; join with slip st in first hdc—10 sts.

First Arm: Ch 8, sc in fourth ch from hook, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in last 2 ch—5 sts.

Body Row 1: 2 dc in next st of head, ch 3, slip st in same st.

Second Arm: Ch 8, sc in fourth ch from hook, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in last 2 ch, slip st in top of ch-3 of Body Row 1.

Body Row 2: Ch 3, dc in top of ch-3 of Body Row 1, 2 dc in next 2 dc.

First Leg: Ch 3, 2 dc in first 2 dc, turn.

Ankle: Ch 1, draw up a loop in each of the first 4 dc, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook.

Foot: Ch 5, slip st in fifth ch from hook.

Slip st up inside edge of ankle and first leg, sl st in next 2 dc of Body Row 2.

Second Leg: Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, 2 dc in top of Body Row 2 beginning ch-3, turn.

Work ankle and foot as for ankle and foot of first leg.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

 

FINISHING

Cardigan Assembly

Sew fronts to back at shoulders. Set in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew 6 people evenly spaced around lower half of cardigan.

Cardigan Ties

Join MC with slip st in edge of Row 15 of one front piece.

Row 1: Ch 2, work 4 hdc evenly along edges of Rows 15–18, turn.

Rows 2–25: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn.

Fasten off. Repeat on other front piece.

Hat Finishing

Sew 2 people to hat, one on each side.
