MATERIALS


Caron International’s Simply Soft Collection (100% Acrylic):

Shown in (Child’s): #0015 Strawberry (A), 7oz and #0009 Garnet (B), 3oz.

Shown in (Adult’s): #0009 Garnet (A), 7oz and #0015 Strawberry (B), 4oz.

Small amounts of #0003 Pistachio (C) and #0017 Lemon (D) for embroidery

One pair size U.S. 5 (3.75mm) straight needles or size needed to obtain gauge.


One set each size U.S. 5 (3.75mm) and U.S. 7 (4.5mm) double-pointed needles (dpns)


Crochet hook size U.S. G-6 (4mm)

GAUGE

In St st using size U.S. 7 (4.5mm) needles, 20 sts and 28 rows = 4”/10cm 

STITCHES USED

Stockinette stitch (St st):

Knit on RS, purl on WS

SPECIAL TERMS

M1 – Make 1 st: Insert needle under the horizontal bar between 2 sts and knit it (= inc).

St st Twist: *K5, rotate the LH needle counter clockwise around, k next 5 and turn LH needle again counter clockwise 360 degrees; rep from * across.

NOTES

The border is worked with the contrasting color (B) in twist stitch on a straight needle in order to turn it around.

The border can also be completed after the mitten is made using a crocheted shell stitch.

 

RIGHT MITTEN

With straight needles and B, CO 40 (50) sts.

Edging: Knit one row, purl one row. Fasten off B.

Twist patt: Join A and with smaller dpns, *k5, rotate the LH needle counter clockwise 360 degrees, k5 sts and rotate the LH needle again clockwise 360 degrees; rep from * meanwhile putting work onto 3 dpns. Mark beg of row. Join being careful not to twist sts. Work in St st (= k every rnd) for 14 (20) rnds. Change to larger dpns.

Dec rnd: K, dec 12 (14) sts evenly on round—28 (36) sts.

K one rnd.

Eyelet rnd: *K2, yo, k2tog; rep from * around—28 (36) sts.

K 3 (5) rnds.

Thumb gusset: K2, pm (place marker), M1, k1, M1, pm, k around to marker—30 (38) sts.

K one rnd.

Next rnd: K2, sm (slip marker), M1, k3, M1, sm, k to end of rnd—32 (40) sts.

K one rnd.

Rep last 2 rnds until there are 36 (48) sts on needles.

 

Hand: Remove 9 (13) sts for thumb and place on holder—27 (35) sts rem.

Next rnd: K26 (34) sts, inc 1 st in next st—28 (36) sts.

Cont even in St st until piece measures 6 ½ (9 ½)” from CO edge.

Dec rnd: Place markers between 14th (18th) and 15th (19th) sts, then k to 2 sts before marker, sl 1, k1, psso, k to 2 sts before end of rnd, k2tog (2 sts dec’d).

Rep dec rnd until 14 (20) sts rem. K even for 1 ½ (2)”.

Last rnd: K2tog around—7 (10) sts. Cut yarn and gather firmly. Fasten off.

Thumb: Divide 9 (13) thumb sts from holder evenly onto dpns.

K, inc 1 st at end of rnd when closing thumb—10 (14) sts.

Work around in St st for 1 ½ (2)”.

Last rnd: K2tog around—5 (7) sts. Cut yarn and gather firmly. Fasten off.

 

LEFT MITTEN

Work same as Right Mitten to thumb gusset.

Thumb gusset: K25 (33), pm, M1, k1, M1, pm, k2—30 (38) sts.

K one rnd.

Next rnd: K to marker, sm, M1, k3, M1, sm, k2.

K one rnd.

Rep last 2 rnds until there are 36 (48) sts.

Hand and Thumb: Complete same as Right Mitten.

 

 

FINISHING

Sew seam at St st Twist section. Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.

Chain (make 2)

With crochet hook and B, chain 75 (85), turn. Sl st in each ch. Fasten off.

Starting at center front of mitten, weave chain through eyelets.

Tassel

With D, make 4 tassels for each pair of mittens. Tie each tassel with same color as chain. Attach to each end of chains.

Embroidery

Place small piece of cardboard inside mitten to embroider.

Follow photo for embroidery placement.

Center of Flower: Using D make bullion stitch for center of flower, winding yarn loosely five times around needle, pull needle through and up (hold coil in place with left thumb), couch in place.

Flower Petals: Using C, work 10 straight stitches for flower petals.

Bud: Using B, work bullion stitch for buds.

Stem: Using C, work stem stitch for winding stem.
