One size US I-9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook or size to obtain gauge
Yarn needle
GAUGE
One square motif measures approximately 5"/12.5cm, measured diagonally from point to point and slightly stretched.
Gauge is not critical for this project.
STITCHES USED
Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st), treble crochet (tr)
SPECIAL TECHNIQUES
Invisible join—After last stitch in a round is made, cut yarn leaving a 6"/15cm tail. Pull tail completely through last stitch. Thread the tail onto yarn needle and weave the end under the top 2 loops of the first st of the round and then back down into the center of the top of the last stitch of the round.
Join with sc—Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.
NOTES
1. Throw is made from 275 square motifs and 49 half square motifs, whip stitched together.
2. To change color in joining sl st, insert hook in first st, yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook.
SQUARE MOTIF (make 275)
Make 137 motifs using A for first color. Make 138 motifs using B for first color.
With first color, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Round 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 3 dc in ring, ch 3, [4 dc in ring, ch 3] 3 times; join with sl st in first dc (top of beginning ch) and change to C—16 dc and 4 ch-3 sps. Do not fasten off first color.
Round 2: With C, sl st in next 3 dc, sl st in next ch-3 sp, [sl st in next 4 dc, sl st in next ch-3 sp] 3 times; join to first sl st with an invisible join—20 sl sts. Fasten off C.
Round 3: Draw up a loop of first color in join of Round 1, ch 3, working behind the sts of Round 2 into sts of Round 1, dc in next 3 dc, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp, [dc in next 4 dc, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp]; join with sl st in first dc—32 dc and 4 ch-3 sps. Fasten off first color.
Round 4: With RS facing, join C with sc in any ch-3 sp of Round 3, sc in same ch-3 sp, working in front of the ch-3 sp of Round 3 and over the top of the sl st of Round 2, tr in next ch-3 sp of Round 1, 2 sc in same ch-3 sp of Round 3, [sc in next 8 dc, 2 sc in next ch-3 sp, working in front of the ch-3 sp of Round 3 and over the top of the sl st of Round 2, tr in next ch-3 sp of Round 1, 2 sc in same ch-3 sp of Round 3] 3 times, sc in last 8 dc; join with sl st in first sc—48 sc and 4 tr. Fasten off C.
HALF SQUARE MOTIF (make 50)
Make 26 motifs using A for first color. Make 24 motifs using B for first color.

FINISHING
Arrange motifs as shown in assembly diagram and whipstitch together, sewing through back loops only.
Border
Round 1 (RS): With RS facing, join C with sc in first st following any corner, sc evenly spaced around, working 5 sc in each corner, make sure to work an odd number of sts evenly across each side edge; join with sl st in first sc.
Round 2: Sl st in next sc, ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), [sk next sc, *dc in next sc, ch 1, sk next sc; repeat from * across to next 5-sc corner, dc in next sc, ch 1, sk next sc, (dc, ch 5, dc) in next sc (corner), ch 1, sk next sc, dc in next sc, ch 1] 4 times; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch.
