STITCHES USED

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st), treble crochet (tr)

 

LARGE SQUARE (make 32)

With B, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 15 dc in ring; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—16 dc. Fasten off.

Round 2: Join D with sl st in any dc, ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), *dc in next dc, ch 1; repeat from * around; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch—16 dc and 16 ch-1 sp. Fasten off.

Round 3: Join C with sl st in any ch-1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-1 sp, 3 dc in each remaining ch-1 sp around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—48 dc (sixteen 3-dc groups). Fasten off.

Round 4: Join A with sc in any sp between 3-dc groups, *ch 3, sk next 3-dc group, sc in sp between 3-dc groups; repeat from * to last 3-dc group, ch 3, sk last 3-dc group; join with sl st in first sc—16 sc and 16 ch-3 sp.

Round 5: Sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 4 (counts as first tr), (2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in same ch-3 sp (corner made), *3 dc in next ch-3 sp, 3 hdc in next ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in next ch-3 sp (corner made); repeat from * 2 more times, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, 3 hdc in next ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners and 9 sts across each side.

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in next 2 sts, *5 sc in corner ch-2 sp, sc in next 15 sts; repeat from * 2 more times, 5 sc in corner ch-2 sp, sc in next 12 sts; join with sl st in first sc—Four 5-sc corners and 15 sc across each side.

Round 7: Sl st in next sc, ch 3, dc in same sc, sk next sc, 2 dc in next sc, *sk next sc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next sc (center sc of corner 5-sc group), [sk next sc, 2 dc in next sc] 9 times; repeat from * 2 more times, sk next sc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next sc, [sk next sc, 2 dc in next sc] 7 times, sk last sc; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners and nine 2-dc groups across each side.

Round 8: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in next 5 dc, *(hdc, dc, hdc) in corner ch-1 sp, sc in each dc to next corner ch-1 sp; repeat from * 2 more times, (hdc, dc, hdc) in corner ch-1 sp, sc in each dc to end of round; join with sl st in first sc—4 corners and 22 dc across each side. Fasten off.

 

SMALL SQUARE 1 (make 62)

Round 1: With B, ch 4 (counts as first dc), work 15 dc in 4th ch from hook; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—16 dc.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, *ch 3, sk next dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, sk next dc, sc in next dc; repeat from * 2 more times, ch 3, sk next dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, sk next dc; join with sl st in first sc—4 ch-3 sp, and 4 ch-2 sp.

Round 3: Sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same ch-3 sp (corner made), *3 dc in next ch-2 sp, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp (corner made); repeat from * 2 more times, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners and 3 dc across each side. Fasten off.

Round 4: Join A with sl st in any corner ch-1 sp, ch 2 (counts as hdc), (dc, hdc) in same ch-1 sp, *sc in next 9 sts, (hdc, dc, hdc) in next corner ch-1 sp; repeat from * 2 more times, sc in next 9 sts; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners and 9 sc across each side. Fasten off.

 

SMALL SQUARE 2 (make 62)

Make same as Small Square 1, in the following color sequence: Work Rounds 1–3 with C, work Round 4 with A.

 

FINISHING

Arrange squares as shown in assembly diagram, and sew together.

Border

Round 1: Join A with sc in center dc of any corner, 2 sc in same dc, skipping all seams, sc in each st to center dc of next corner, *3 sc in corner dc, skipping all seams, sc in each st to center dc of next corner; repeat from * 2 more times; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Round 2:  Join D with sl st in center sc of any corner, ch 4, 4 tr in same sc, tr in each sc to center sc of next corner, *5 tr in center sc of corner, tr in each sc to center sc of next corner; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch. Fasten off.

Round 3: Join A with sc in center tr of any corner, ch 3, sc in same tr, sc in each tr to center tr of next corner, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in center tr of corner, sc in each tr to center tr of next corner; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc.

Round 4: Sl st in first corner ch-3 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same ch-3 sp, dc in each sc to next corner ch-3 sp, *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in corner ch-3 sp, dc in each sc to next corner ch-3 sp; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch. Fasten off.
