SKIRT

Notes:

1. The skirt is made from 8 (10, 10, 12, 12) strips of granny squares.

2. Each strip consists of 4 (5, 5, 6, 6) granny squares.

3. Each granny square is made using two colors, and is joined to previous granny squares using a "join as you go" technique.

4. Make the number of strips, consisting of the number of granny squares, and worked with the two colors indicated below, for the desired size.

Size 2 (make a total of 8 strips, in the following color sequences)

Strip 1 (make 4): First granny: B, A; second granny: C, D; third granny: B, E; fourth granny: C, F

Strip 2 (make 4): First granny: C, E; second granny: B, F; third granny: C, A; fourth granny: B, D

Sizes 4 and 6 (make a total of 10 strips, in the following color sequences)

Strip 1 (make 5): First-fourth granny: same as for Size 2; fifth granny: B, A

Strip 2 (make 5): First-fourth granny: same as for Size 2; fifth granny: C, E

Sizes 8 and 10 (make a total of 12 strips, in the following color sequences)

Strip 1 (make 6): First-fifth granny: same as for Sizes 4 and 6; sixth granny: C, D

Strip 2 (make 6): First-fifth granny: same as for Sizes 4 and 6; sixth granny: B, F

First Granny Square

With first color, ch 4; join with sl st to form a ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 2 dc in ring, [ch 1, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, ch 1; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch—Four 3-dc groups. Fasten off.

Round 2: With RS facing, join 2nd color with sl st in any ch-1 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch-1 sp (first corner made), [ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-1 sp (corner made)] 3 times, ch 1; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners, and ch-1 sps between corners. Fasten off.

Next Granny Square

With first color, ch 4; join with sl st to form a ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 2 dc in ring, [ch 1, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, ch 1; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch—Four 3-dc groups. Fasten off.

Note: In the next round the current granny square is joined to the previous granny square, across one side, to form a strip of granny squares. When joining, hold both granny squares with RS facing you. A "join as you go" technique is used to join the granny squares. When instructed, work a motif-join as follows:

motif-join: Drop loop from hook, insert hook from RS to WS through corresponding ch-sp of previous granny square, place dropped loop back on hook and draw the loop through to the RS.

Round 2: With RS facing, join 2nd color with sl st in any ch-1 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch-1 sp (first corner made), ch 1, *3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, motif-join, ch 1, 3 dc in same ch-1 sp (corner completed), ch 1, motif-join, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, motif-join, ch 1, 3 dc in same ch-1 sp (corner completed), ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in last ch-1 sp, ch 1; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners, ch-1 sps between corners, and current granny square joined to previous granny across one side. Fasten off.

Join Strips

Note: When joining strips, each dc, ch-1 sp, and ch-2 sp count as one st each.

Arrange strips with RS facing, placing long edges together and alternating strip 1 and strip 2.

Edge a Strip 1 (RS): With RS facing, join C with a sl st in ch-2 sp of lowest granny of a strip 1, to work across long edge of strip, ch 4 (counts as first tr here and throughout); working one st in each dc, ch-1 sp, and ch-2 sp (treat each ch-2 sp as only one st), tr in next 11 (14, 14, 17, 17) sts, dc in next 8 (10, 10, 12, 12) sts, hdc in next 8 (10, 10, 12, 12) sts, sc in last 8 (10, 10, 12, 12) sts—36 (45, 45, 54, 54) sts. Fasten off.

Edge the Neighboring Strip 2 (RS): With RS facing, join C with a sl st in ch-2 sp of top granny of neighboring strip 2, to work across long edge of strip, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp; working one st in each dc, ch-1 sp, and ch-2 sp (treat each ch-2 sp as only one st), sc in next 7 (9, 9, 11, 11) sts, hdc in next 8 (10, 10, 12, 12) sts, dc in next 8 (10, 10, 12, 12) sts, tr in last 12 (15, 15, 18, 18) sts—36 (45, 45, 54, 54) sts. Do not fasten off.

Join the Edged Strip 1 and Strip 2: Hold RS of strip 1 and strip 2 together (WS facing you); working through both thicknesses, sl st in each st across to join strip 1 to strip 2. Fasten off.

Repeat the edging and joining process, alternating C and D for edging and joining color, joining all strips across long edges to form skirt. Note: Remember to join the last strip to the first strip to form a complete ring of strips.

BACK BODICE

Row 1 (RS): With RS facing, join A with sl st in ch-2 sp of a top granny (the top is the narrower end of the ring of strips), ch 1, [9 sc across the top of the next granny square, sc in the join] 4 (5, 5, 6, 6) times, turn—40 (50, 50, 60, 60) sts.

Next 0 (3, 1, 4, 2) Rows: Working in front loops only, ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout, dc2tog, dc in each st across to last 2 sts, dc2tog, turn—40 (44 (48, 52, 56) sts.

Next 1 (0, 4, 3, 7) Rows: Ch 3, dc in each dc across, turn—40 (44, 48, 52, 56) sts.

Shape Armholes

Row 1: Sl st in first 4 (5, 6, 7, 8) sts, ch 3 (counts as dc with base in same st as last sl st made), dc in each dc across to last 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts, turn; leave last 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts unworked—34 (36, 38, 40, 42) dc.

Rows 2 and 3: Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each dc across to last 2 dc, dc2tog, turn—30 (32, 34, 36, 38) dc.

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in each dc across, turn.

Repeat last row until armhole measures 4 1/2 (5, 5 1/2, 6, 6 1/2)"/11.5 (12.5, 14, 15, 16.5)cm. Fasten off.

FRONT BODICE

Working across top of remaining skirt granny squares, work same as back bodice until armhole measures 2 (2 1/2, 3, 3 1/2, 4)"/5 (6.5, 7.5, 9, 10)cm.

Shape Neck and First Shoulder

Row 1: Ch 3, dc in next 8 (9, 10, 11, 12) dc, turn; leave remaining sts unworked for neck and 2nd shoulder—9 (10, 11, 12, 13) dc.

Row 2: Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each dc across, turn—8 (9, 10, 11, 12) dc.

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in each dc across to last 2 dc, dc2tog, turn—7 (8, 9, 10, 11) dc.

Repeat last 2 rows once more—5 (6, 7, 8, 9) dc. Fasten off.

Shape Neck and Second Shoulder

Sk 12 unworked sts following first shoulder for neck, join yarn with sl st in next st.

Row 1: Ch 3, dc in each remaining dc across—9 (10, 11, 12, 13) dc.

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in each dc across to last 2 dc, dc2tog, turn—8 (9, 10, 11, 12) dc.

Row 3: Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each dc across, turn—7 (8, 9, 10, 11) dc.

Repeat last 2 rows once more—5 (6, 7, 8, 9) dc. Fasten off.

SLEEVE (make 2)

Cuff

Make 3 (4, 4, 4, 4) granny squares, in your choice of colors, and join into a strip (as for skirt).

Body

With RS of cuff facing, join A with sl st in top corner, to work across long edge.

Row 1: Ch 1, work 27 (36, 36, 36, 36) sc evenly spaced across long top edge to opposite corner, turn—27 (36, 36, 36, 36) sts.

Row 2: Working in front loops only, ch 3, dc in each sc across, turn.

Sizes 2 (6, 8, 10) only

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in each dc across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in first dc (increase made), dc in each dc across to last dc, 2 dc in last dc, turn—29 (38, 38, 38) dc.

Repeat last 2 rows 1 (1, 3, 5) more times—31 (40, 44, 48) dc.

All sizes

Next Row: Ch 3, dc in each dc across, turn—31 (36, 40, 44, 48) dc.

Repeat last row until piece measures 6 3/4 (7 3/4, 7 3/4, 8 3/4, 9 3/4)"/17 (19.5, 19.5, 22, 25)cm from beginning.

Shape Cap

Row 1: Sl st in first 4 (5, 6, 7, 8) sts, ch 3 (counts as dc with base in same st as last sl st made), dc in each dc across to last 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts, turn; leave last 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts unworked—25 (28, 30, 32, 34) dc.

Row 2: Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each dc across to last 2 dc, dc2tog, turn—23 (26, 28, 30, 32) dc.

Repeat last row 2 (3, 4, 5, 6) more times—19 (20, 20, 20, 20) dc. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Sew shoulder seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.

Neck Edging

With RS facing, join A with sl st in neck at seam, to work across back neck.

Round 1: Ch 1, work 20 sc evenly spaced across back neck, 9 sc evenly spaced across side neck edge, 12 sc evenly spaced across front neck, 9 sc evenly spaced across other side neck edge; join with sl st in first sc—50 sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc.

Round 3: Ch 1, *sl st in next sc, ch 1; repeat from * around. Fasten off.

Using yarn needle, weave in ends. Block lightly, if desired.
