Crochet Striped Mittens Instructions

MATERIALS

Caron International's Simply Soft® (100% Acrylic): 2 oz (A), 1 oz (B), 1 oz (C)

Shown in:

Boy's Mittens: #0004 Blueberry (A); #0003 Pistachio (B); #0016 Melon (C)

Girl's Mittens: #0015 Strawberry (A); #0003 Pistachio (B); #0017 Lemon (C)

One pair size US 5 (3.75mm) needles (for ribbing)

One pair size US 6 (4.25mm) needles, or size to obtain gauge

One crochet hook—size H-8 (5 mm)

GAUGE

In Stockinette st, using larger needles, 18 sts and 24 rows = 4"/10cm

 

STITCHES USED

Stockinette stitch (St st): Knit on RS, purl on WS.

2 x 2 Rib

Row 1 (RS): *K2, p2; repeat from * across.

Row 2: Knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts as they face you.

Repeat Row 2 for 2 x 2 rib.

 

SPECIAL TERMS

k1-f/b: Knit 1 front and back—Knit next st without removing st from left needle, then knit it through the back loop. (1 st increased)

k2tog: Knit 2 together—Knit 2 sts together through the front loops. (1 st decreased)

M1: Make 1—Lift strand between needles to LH needle and knit strand through the back loop, twisting it to prevent a hole. (1 st increased)

 

NOTES

1. Mittens are worked from striped cuff upwards.

2. Mittens are worked back and forth in rows then seamed.

MITTEN (make 2)

Color Sequence: *Work 2 rows with A, 2 rows with B, 2 rows with C; repeat from * as needed.

Cuff

With smaller needles and A, cast on 24 sts.

Work in 2 x 2 Rib and color sequence for 12 rows.

Shape for Thumb

Change to larger needles.

Row 1 (increase row – RS): K1-f/b, k to last st, k1-f/b—26 sts.

Row 2 (WS): Purl.

Row 3: K12, place marker (pm), m1, k2, m1, pm, k12—4 sts between markers (for thumb).

Row 4: Purl.

Row 5: K to marker, slip marker (sm), m1, k to next marker, m1, sm, k to end of row—6 sts between markers.

Rows 6 and 7: Repeat Rows 4 and 5—8 sts between markers.

Row 8: Purl.

Divide for Hand and Thumb

Next Row (RS): K12, place these 12 sts on a stitch holder (for hand, on right side of thumb), k8 (for thumb), place rem 12 sts on holder (also for hand, on left side of thumb).

Thumb

Work even in Stockinette st over 8 thumb sts only until thumb measures 1 1/4"/3cm, ending with a WS row.

Next Row (RS): [K2tog] 4 times—4 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Using yarn needle, thread tail through stitches of last row and pull gently to gather. With tail, sew sides of thumb together.

Hand

With RS facing, return 24 hand sts to left needle.

Next Row (RS): Join yarn at beg of 12 sts on left side of thumb, k these 12 sts.

Next Row (WS): Purl across all 24 hand sts.

Work even in Stockinette st over 24 hand sts until hand measures 3 1/2"/9cm from ribbing, ending with a WS row.

Top of Hand

Row 1 (RS): *K2, k2tog; repeat from * across—18 sts.

Row 2: Purl.

Row 3: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * across—12 sts.

Row 4: Purl.

Row 5: [K2tog] 6 times—6 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Using yarn needle, thread tail through stitches of last row and pull gently to gather. With tail, sew sides of hand together.

Cord (make 1)

With crochet hook and A, chain 100. Fasten off.

 

FINISHING

Using yarn needle, sew each end of cord to one mitten. Weave in ends.
