STITCHES USED

Stockinette stitch (St st): Knit on RS, purl on WS.

2 x 2 Rib

Row 1 (RS): *K2, p2; repeat from * across.

Row 2: Knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts as they face you.

k2tog: Knit 2 together—Knit 2 sts together through the front loops. (1 st decreased)

NOTES

1. Hat is worked from striped lower edge (cuff) upwards.

2. Hat is worked back and forth in rows then seamed.

3. When changing colors, twist strands on WS of work to prevent holes.

HAT

Color Sequence: *Work 2 rows with A, 2 rows with B, 2 rows with C; repeat from * as needed.

Cuff

With smaller needles and A, cast on 68 (80) sts.

Work in 2 x 2 Rib and color sequence for 23 rows.

Next Row (increase row): With C, work in 2 x 2 Rib across to last st, k1-f/b—69 (81) sts.

Top of Hat

Change to larger needles.

Next Row (RS): With C, k23 (27); with B, k23 (27); with A, k23 (27).

Next Row (WS): With A, p23 (27); with B, p23 (27); with C, p23 (27).

Repeat last 2 rows until hat measures 8 (9)"/20.5 (23)cm from beginning, ending with a WS row.

First Point

Note: The first point is worked over the 23 (27) C-colored sts only.

Row 1 (RS): With C, k23 (27), place next 46 (54) sts on a stitch holder, turn. Work point over remaining 23 (27) sts only.

Work even in Stockinette st for 3 rows.

Next Row (decrease row): K2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog—21 (25) sts.

Repeat last 4 rows once more—19 (23) sts.

Work even in Stockinette st for 1 row.

Repeat decrease row—17 (21) sts.

Repeat last 2 rows 6 (8) more times—5 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Using yarn needle, thread tail through stitches of last row and pull gently to gather. With tail, sew sides of point together.

Second Point

With RS facing, return 23 (27) B-colored sts to left needle.

Row 1 (RS): With B, k23 (27).

Complete as for first point.

Third Point

With RS facing, return 23 (27) C-colored sts to left needle.

Row 1 (RS): With C, k23 (27).

Complete as for first point.

FINISHING

Sew sides of hat together. Weave in ends.

Tassels (make 3): Holding 1 strand of each color together, wrap yarn around 3 1/2"/9cm piece of heavy cardboard, 6 times. Thread an 8"/20.5cm length of yarn under top of wraps and tie in a knot. Cut lower ends of wraps and remove from cardboard. Wrap an 8"/20.5cm length of yarn around the tassel, about 3/4"/2cm below the top to form tassel neck, and draw ends down through tassel neck to inside of tassel. Tie one tassel to top of each point.
