GAUGE

In double crochet, 14 sts and 9 rows = 4"/10cm.

Gauge is not critical for this project.

 

STITCHES USED

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st)

 

SPECIAL STITCHES

dc2tog: Double crochet 2 together—[Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

dc3tog: Double crochet 3 together—[Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] 3 times, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.


 NOTES

1. Afghan is made from 93 pieces: 9 hexagons, 48 squares, 26 triangles, 4 pentagons, 4 edge triangles, and 2 corner triangles. Pieces are then arranged, as shown in Assembly Diagram, and sewn together.

2. Pieces are worked with RS facing throughout. Do not turn at the end of rounds, unless otherwise instructed.

 

HEXAGON (make 9)

With B, ch 6; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 17 dc in ring; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—18 dc.

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, ch 3 (corner made), [dc in next 3 dc, ch 3 (corner made)] 5 times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—18 dc and 6 ch-3 sps.

Round 3: Ch 3, [dc in each dc to next corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next corner ch-3 sp, ch 3] 6 times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—36 dc and 6 ch-3 sps.

Rounds 4–9: Repeat Round 3—144 dc and 6 ch-3 sps at the end of Round 9. Fasten off.

Edging Round: With RS facing, join A with sl st in any corner ch-3 sp, ch 1, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in same corner ch-3 sp, sc in each dc to next corner ch-3 sp, [(2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in next corner ch-3 sp, sc in each dc to next corner ch-3 sp] 5 times; join with sl st in first sc—168 sc and 6 ch-3 sps. Fasten off.

 

SQUARE (make 48 – 6 each with C, D, E, F, G, H, I and J)

Ch 6; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in ring, ch 3, [4 dc in ring, ch 3] 3 times, 2 dc in ring; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—16 dc and 4 ch-3 sps.

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in each dc to next ch-3 sp, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp (corner made), [dc in each dc to next ch-3 sp, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp (corner made)] 3 times, dc in each dc to end of round; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—32 dc and 4 ch-3 sps.

Rounds 3–6: Repeat Round 2—96 dc and 4 ch-3 sps at the end of Round 6. Fasten off.

Edging Round: With RS facing, join A with sl st in any corner ch-3 sp, ch 1, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in same corner ch-3 sp, sc in each dc to next corner ch-3 sp, [(2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in next corner ch-3 sp, sc in each dc to next corner ch-3 sp] 3 times; join with sl st in first sc—112 sc and 4 ch-3 sps. Fasten off.

 

TRIANGLE (make 26)

With B, ch 6; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 3 dc in ring, ch 4, [4 dc in ring, ch 4] 2 times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—12 dc and 3 ch-4 sps.

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in each dc to next ch-4 sp, (4 dc, ch 4, 4 dc) in next ch-4 sp (corner made), [dc in each dc to next ch-4 sp, (4 dc, ch 3, 4 dc) in next ch-4 sp (corner made)] 2 times, dc in each dc to end of round; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—36 dc and 3 ch-4 sps.

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in each dc to next corner ch-4 sp, (3 dc, ch 4, 3 dc) in next corner ch-4 sp, [dc in each dc to next corner ch-4 sp, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next corner ch-4 sp] 2 times, dc in each dc to end of round; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—54 dc and 3 ch-4 sps.

Round 4: Repeat Round 3—72 dc and 4 ch-3 sps. Fasten off.

PENTAGON (make 4)

With B, ch 6; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rounds 1–4: Work Rounds 1–4 of Hexagon—54 dc and 6 ch-3 ps.

Round 5: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in next st, dc in next 7 sts, 3 dc in next corner ch-3 sp, ch 3, [dc in each st to next corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next corner ch-3 sp, ch 3] 4 times, dc in next 8 sts, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next corner ch-3 sp; join with sl st in top of beginning ch.

Round 6: Sl st in next 6 sts, sc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, 3 dc in next corner ch-3 sp, ch 3, [dc in each st to next corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next corner ch-3 sp, ch 3] 4 times, dc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next st, sl st in next st, TURN.

EDGE TRIANGLE (make 4)

With B, ch 34.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—33 sc.

Rows 2–8: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc3tog, dc in each st across to last 3 sts, dc3tog, turn—5 dc at the end of Row 8.

Row 9: Ch 3, dc3tog, dc in last st—3 dc.

Edging Round: With RS facing, join A with sl st in dc3tog of Row 9, ch 1, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in same st, work 24 sc evenly spaced across side edge to next corner, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in next corner, work 32 sc evenly spaced across bottom of foundation ch, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in next corner, work 24 sc evenly spaced across side edge to end of round; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

 

CORNER TRIANGLE (make 2)

With B, ch 28.

Row 1 (RS): Dc in 4th ch from hook (beginning ch counts as first dc), dc in each remaining ch across, turn—26 dc.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc3tog, dc in each dc across, turn—24 sts.

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in each st across to last 3 sts, dc3tog, turn—22 sts.

Rows 4–9: Repeat Rows 2 and 3—10 sts at the end of Row 9.

Row 10: Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in each st across, turn—9 sts.

Row 11: Repeat Row 3—7 sts.

Row 12: Repeat Row 10—6 sts.

Row 13: Ch 3, dc in each st across to last 2 sts, dc2tog, turn—5 sts.

Rows 14 and 15: Repeat Rows 12 and 13—3 sts at the end of Row 15.

Row 16: Ch 3, dc2tog—2 sts. Fasten off.

Edging Round: With RS facing, join A with sl st between last 2 sts of Row 16, ch 1, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in same st, work 52 sc evenly spaced across side edge to next corner, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in next corner, work 25 sc evenly spaced across bottom of foundation ch, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in next corner, work 30 sc evenly spaced across side edge to end of round; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

 

FINISHING

With RS facing, arrange pieces as shown in Assembly Diagram. Whipstitch pieces together.

Border

Round 1 (RS): With RS facing, draw up a loop of A in any st, ch 3, dc in each st around, working 5 dc in each corner; join with sl st in top of beginning ch. Fasten off.

Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. Block lightly, if desired.
