Caron International's Simply Soft (100% Acrylic): 16 (19, 22, 25, 28) oz (A), 3 (3, 4, 5, 5) oz (B)

One circular needle size US 8 (5mm), 29"/73.5cm long, or size to obtain gauge (see “Note” below)

One set double-pointed needles (dpns) size US 8 (5mm)

Stitch markers (ring and removable types recommended)

GAUGE

In stockinette st:18 sts and 24 rows = 4"/10cm.

 

STITCHES USED

Stockinette Stitch (St st): Knit on RS, purl on WS.

Seed Stitch: (over odd number sts)

Row 1 (RS): K1, *p1, k1; repeat from * in indicated sts.

Row 2: K the purl sts and p the knit sts as they face you.

Repeat Row 2 for Seed st. 

 

SPECIAL STITCHES

M1: Make 1 – Lift strand between needles to LH needle and work strand through the back loop, twisting it to prevent a hole, [knit or purl as indicated by pattern st]. (1 st increased)

k2tog: Knit 2 together– Knit 2 sts together through the front loops. (1 st decreased).

ssk: Slip, slip, knit (dec) – Slip 2 sts knitwise, one at a time, to right-hand needle, return sts to left-hand needle in turned position and knit them together through the back loops. (1 st decreased)

 

NOTES

1. Circular needle is used to accommodate large number of stitches. Work back and forth in rows.

2. Vest is worked in one piece to armhole, from lower edge upwards. Piece is then divided into right front, back, and left front.

3. Collar is worked in a mosaic pattern, after shoulders are seamed.

BODY

Cast on 189 (207, 225, 243, 261) sts.

Work in Seed st for 7 rows.

Change to St st, and work even until piece measures 4 (4 1/2, 5, 5 1/2, 6)"/10 (11.5, 12.5, 14, 15) cm from beginning, end with a WS row.

Set-up Row (RS): K38 (41, 44, 47, 50), place marker (pm), k36 (40, 44, 48, 52), pm, k41 (45, 49, 53, 57), pm, k36 (40, 44, 48, 52), pm, k38 (41, 44, 47, 50).

Next Row (WS): Purl.

Shape Sides

Shaping Row (RS): [K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sl marker (sm), k to marker, sm, ssk] twice, k to end of row—185 (203, 221, 239, 257) sts.

Work even in pattern as established for 15 rows.

Repeat Shaping Row—181 (199, 217, 235, 253) sts.

Work even in pattern as established 13 rows.

Repeat Shaping Row—177 (195, 213, 231, 249) sts.

Work even in pattern as established 11 rows.

Repeat Shaping Row—173 (191, 209, 227, 245) sts.

Work even in pattern as established 9 rows.

Repeat Shaping Row—169 (187, 205, 223, 241) sts.

Divide for Fronts and Back.

Row 1 (RS): K1, ssk, k34 (39, 42, 47, 50), sl these 36 (41, 44, 49, 52) sts to a holder for right front; bind off next 6 (6, 8, 8, 10) sts for armhole, k75 (83, 91, 99, 107) for back and sl these sts to a holder, bind off 6 (6, 8, 8, 10) sts for armhole, k34 (39, 42, 47, 50), k2tog, k1—36 (41, 44, 49, 52) sts remain for left front.

 

LEFT FRONT

Continue in St st over remaining left front sts only, and shape piece as follows:

Bind off 2 (3, 3, 4, 4) sts at beginning of next RS row—34 (38, 41, 45, 48) sts.

Shape Neck and Armhole

Decrease 1 st (ssk) at beginning of next and following 4 (5, 6, 6, 7) RS rows and AT THE SAME TIME, decrease 1 st (k2tog) at end of next RS row and every 4th row 10 (11, 11, 12, 12) times—18 (20, 22, 25, 27) sts.

Shape Shoulder

Bind off 6 (6, 7, 8, 9) sts at beginning of next 2 RS rows

Bind off remaining sts.

RIGHT FRONT

Return right front sts to needle and join yarn at armhole edge, ready to work a WS row.

Continue in St st over right front sts only, and shape piece as follows:

Bind off 2 (3, 3, 4, 4) sts at beginning of next WS row—34 (38, 41, 45, 48) sts.

Shape Neck and Armhole

Decrease 1 st (ssk) at beginning of next and following 4 (5, 6, 6, 7) WS rows and AT THE SAME TIME, decrease 1 st (k2tog) at end of next WS row and every 4th row 10 (11, 11, 12, 12) times—18 (20, 22, 25, 27) sts.

Shape Shoulder

Bind off 6 (6, 7, 8, 9) sts at beginning of next 2 WS rows

Bind off remaining sts.

 

BACK

Return back sts to needle and join yarn at armhole edge, ready to work a WS row.

Bind off 2 (3, 3, 4, 4) sts at beginning of next 2 rows—71 (77, 85, 91, 99) sts.

Bind off 1 st at beginning of next 10 (12, 14, 14, 16) rows—61 (65, 71, 77, 83) sts.

Work even in St st until back measures same as fronts to shoulder shaping.

Shape Shoulders

Bind off 6 (6, 7, 8, 9) sts at beginning of next 4 rows—37 (41, 43, 45, 47) sts.

Bind off 6 (8, 8, 8, 9) sts at beginning of next 2 rows—25 (25, 27, 29, 29) sts.

Sl remaining sts to a holder.

FINISHING

Block piece to schematic measurements. Sew shoulder seams.

Armhole Edging

With RS facing and dpns, beginning at underarm, pick up and k64 (70, 76, 82, 88) sts around armhole edge, pm.

Work in Seed st for 2 rnds.

Next Rnd: Work in pattern as established to 2 sts before marker, k2tog.

Rep last 3 rnds once more.

Bind off loosely. Rep around other armhole edge.

Collar

Notes:

On RS rows, slip stitches purlwise with yarn in back (wyib).

One WS rows, slip stitches purlwise with yarn in front (wyif).

Work 2 rows with each color, carrying unused color up right edge of work.

Row 1 (RS): With RS facing and A, pick up and k106 (112, 117, 122, 128) sts across right front edge, sl 25 (25, 27, 29, 29) back neck sts from holder onto needle, pick up and k106 (112, 117, 122, 128) sts across left front edge—237 (249, 261, 273, 285) sts. Place removable stitch marker in center st of row.

Row 2 (WS): Knit.

Row 3: With B, k2, sl 1 wyib, *k1, sl 1 wyib; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.

Row 4 and all WS rows: With same color as previous row, k the knit sts and sl the slipped sts wyif.

Row 5: With A, k3, *sl 1 wyib, k1, sl 1 wyib, k3; repeat from * across.

Row 7: With B, k4, *sl 1 wyib, k5; repeat from * to last 5 sts, sl 1 wyib, k4.

Row 9: With A, k3, sl 1 wyib, k1, *sl 1 wyib, k9, sl 1 wyib, k1; repeat from * to last 4 sts, sl 1 wyib, k3.

Row 21: With A, work Row 13 to 1 st before center marker, k1, sl 1 wyib, k1, continue in Row 13 pattern to end of row.

Row 23 (increase row): With B, work Row 11 to 1 st before center marker, M1, k3, M1, continue in Row 11 to end of row—241 (253, 265, 277, 289) sts.

Row 25: With A, work Row 9 to 2 sts before center marker, k5, continue in Row 9 pattern to end of row.

Row 27 (increase row): With B, work Row 7 to 2 sts before center marker, M1, k5, M1, continue in Row 7 to end of row—243 (255, 267, 279, 291) sts.

Row 29: With A, repeat Row 5.

Row 31 (increase row): With B, work Row 3 to 1 st before marker, M1, sl 1, M1, continue in Row 3 to end of row—245 (257, 269, 281, 293) sts.

Row 33: With A, knit.

Bind off loosely.

Using yarn needle, weave in ends.

Buttonloop

With crochet hook, chain 8. Fasten off. Sew button to left front edge, just below beginning of neck shaping. Fold buttonloop in half and sew ends to WS of right front edge, opposite button.

Using yarn needle, sew outer edge of collar to body of vest. Block lightly, if desired.
