BACK

Using A, cast on 68 (73, 78) sts.

Work in Garter st (= knit every row) for 1”. Change to Stockinette st and work in stripe pattern until piece measures 10 1/2 (12 1/2, 14)” from beg, ending with a WS row. Mark for sleeves. Continue in Stockinette st and stripe pattern until piece measures 16 1/2 (19, 21)”, ending with a WS row. Divide sts on three holders as follows: 23 (25, 27) sts for one shoulder, 22 (23, 24) sts for Back neck, 23 (25, 27) sts for second shoulder.

 

LEFT FRONT

With A, cast on 31 (33, 35) sts.

Work in Garter st for 1”. Change to Stockinette st and work in stripe pattern until piece measures 10 1/2 (12 1/2, 14)” from beg, ending with a WS row. Mark for sleeve. Continue in Stockinette st and stripe pattern until piece measures 15 1/2 (18, 20)” from beg, ending with a RS row.

Shape neck

Next row (WS): Bind off 8 sts at beg of row, work in pattern to end of row – 23 (25, 27) sts.

Continue in Stockinette st and stripe pattern until piece measures same as Back to shoulder, ending with a WS row. Place 23 (25, 27) sts on a holder. 

 

RIGHT FRONT

Work same as Left Front, reversing shaping.

 

SLEEVES

With A, cast on 34 (36, 38) sts.

Work in Garter st for 1”. Change to Stockinette st and work in stripe pattern; AT THE SAME TIME, inc 1 st each side every 4 rows 13 (14, 16) times – 60 (64, 70) sts. Continue even in Stockinette st and stripe pattern until Sleeve measures 12 1/2 (13 1/2, 14 1/2)” Bind off.

 

FINISHING

Join shoulders using three-needle bind off method.

 

HOOD

With RS facing and A, pick up 8 sts from Right Front, 6 (7, 8) sts along Right Front neck edge, 22 (23, 24) sts across Back neck, 6 (7, 8) sts along Left Front neck edge, 8 sts from Left Front -- .50 (53, 56) sts.

Next row (WS): With A, purl inc 8 (7, 8) sts evenly spaced across row – 58 (60, 64) sts.

With A, work in Stockinette st for 2 more rows.

Continue in Stockinette st in stripe pattern until Hood measures 10 (11, 12)”, ending with a WS row. Divide sts on two needles and bind off using three-needle bind off method.

Sew in Sleeves. Sew side and Sleeve seams.

Button and Buttonhole Band:

Note: For boys begin on Left Front, for girls begin on Right Front.

With A, cast on 7 sts; pick up 1 st on bottom of front on body, then knit across. Continue in Garter st with A and at body side knit the last st and one picked up from body together. Continue in this manner up front of sweater, around hood and down other front making five buttonholes evenly spaced on Left Front for boys and Right Front for girls as follows:

Buttonhole row: K2, bind off 2 sts, k2, k the last st and one picked up from body together. On next row, knit and cast on 2 sts over 2 bound-off sts.

When band reaches bottom on Right Front for boys and Left Front for girls, bind off.

Sew in buttons..
