GAUGE

In Broken Rib (unstretched), using U.S. size 8 (5 mm) needles, 20 sts and 27 rows = 4"/10 cm

In Horseshoe Pattern on U.S. size 8 (5 mm) needles, 18 sts and 24 rows = 4"/10cm

Garter stitch (Garter st)

Horseshoe Pattern (multiple of 10 sts + 1)

Row 1 (RS): K1, *yo, k3, sl 1, k2tog, psso, k3, yo, k1, rep from * across.

Row 2: Purl.

Row 3: P1, *k1, yo, k2, sl 1, k2tog, psso, k2, yo, k1, p1, rep from * across.

Row 4: K1, *p9, k1, rep from * across.

Row 5: P1, *k2, yo, k1, sl 1, k2tog, psso, k1, yo, k2, p1, rep from * across.

Row 6: K1, *p9, k1, rep from * across.

Row 7: P1, *k3, yo, sl 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k3, p1, rep from * across.

NOTE

Garment is worked, back and forth on circular needles, in one piece to armholes.

 

BODY

Using size 10 circular needle, CO 167 (187, 207, 227, 247) sts. Do not join. Work 3 rows Garter st for border.

Est Patt (RS): K3 (edging), work Horseshoe patt across next 161 (181, 201, 221, 241) sts, end k3 (edging).  Keeping first and last 3 sts in Garter st; work even in est patt until piece measures 8" from beg. Change to size 9 circular needle. Continue as est until piece measures 14" from beg.  Change to size 8 circular needle. Continue as est until piece measures 25" from beg, ending with patt Row 8.

Divide for Fronts and Back

Continue with size 8 needles and change to Broken Rib patt:

(RS): K3 (edging), work Broken Rib across next 35 (40, 43, 47, 50) sts and sl on a holder for right front, BO next 10 (10, 14, 16, 20) sts for armhole, work Broken Rib patt across next 71 (81, 87, 95, 101) sts for back, leave rem 48 (53, 60, 66, 73) sts on a holder for left front.

Back           

Dec row (WS): K1, ssk, work Broken Rib patt to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.  

Continue in est patt working dec row every RS row 4 (4, 5, 7, 9) more times--61 (71, 75, 79, 81) sts. Work even until armholes measure 7 (7 ½, 8, 8 ½, 9)" above dividing row. 

Shape shoulders: BO 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts at beg of next 2 rows, 5 (7, 7, 7, 8) sts at beg of next 2 rows, 5 (7, 7, 8, 8) sts at beg of next 2 rows.  Place rem 31 (31, 35, 35, 35) sts on holder for back neck.

Left Front

With RS facing, return to sts on holder for left front, join yarn, BO next 10 (10, 14, 16, 20) sts for armhole, work Broken Rib patt across next 35 (40, 43, 47, 50) sts, k3 (edging).  Maintaining 3 sts in Garter st (edging), dec 1 st at armhole edge every RS row  5 (5, 6, 8, 10) times, AT SAME TIME dec 1 st at neck edge every RS row 14 (14, 16, 16, 16)  times as follows: on RS row work across to last 6 sts, k2 tog, p1, k3--19 (24, 24, 26, 27) sts rem

Work even until piece measures same as back to shoulder.

Shape shoulder and Neckband:  BO at beg of armhole edge 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts once, 5 (7, 7, 7, 8) sts once, 5 (7, 7, 8, 8) sts as for back.  Continue on rem 4 sts for neckband as follows:

Row 1 (WS): K4. 

Row 2 (RS): K3, p1. 

Rep Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 3 1/8 (3 1/8, 3 ½, 3 ½, 3 ½) ". BO..

Right Front

With WS facing, join yarn to right front sts on holder.  Maintaining 3 sts in Garter st (edging), dec 1 st at armhole edge every RS row 5 (5, 6, 8, 10) times, AT SAME TIME dec 1 st at neck edge every RS row 14 (14, 16, 16, 16)  times working first 6 sts of each RS row as follows:  On RS row k3, p1, ssk, then finish row---19 (24, 24, 26, 27) sts rem

Work even until piece measures same as back to shoulder.

Shape shoulder and Neckband: Shape shoulder as for left front reversing shaping.   Continue on rem 4 sts for neckband as follows:

Row 1 (RS): K3, p1.

Row 2 (WS): K4. 

Rep Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 3 1/8 (3 1/8, 3 ½, 3 ½, 3 ½) ". BO.

 

SLEEVES

Using 7 straight needles, CO 41 (43, 45, 47, 49) sts. K 3 rows for border. Change to size 8 straight needles and Broken Rib patt.

Shape Sleeve: Inc 1 st each side every 4 rows 0 (0, 0, 0, 4) times, every 6 rows 0 (0, 4, 12, 15) times, every 8 rows 0 (5, 10, 4, 0) times, then every 10 rows 10 (6, 0, 0, 0) times working added sts into patt--61 (65, 73, 79, 87) sts.  Work even until piece measures 16 (16, 16 ½, 16 ½, 17)" from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape Cap: BO 5 (5, 7, 8, 10) sts at beg of next 2 rows—51 (55, 59, 63, 67) sts. Dec 1 st each side every other row 12 (13, 14, 15, 16) times— 27 (29, 31, 33, 35) sts. BO 3 sts at beg of next 4 rows. BO rem 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) sts.

 

FINISHING

Block pieces to measurements.  Sew shoulder seams. Sew bound-off ends of neck edging together, then sew neck edging to back neck.  Set in sleeves; sew sleeve seams.

Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
