One circular US size 9 (5.50mm) needle, 36” long  

One pair US size 9 (5.50mm) needles

One pair US size 7 (4.50mm) needles

GAUGE

In Stockinet stitch with larger needles, 16 sts and 20 rows = 4"/10cm

In Garter stitch with smaller needles, 18 sts and 24 rows = 4"/10cm

In Garter stitch with larger needles, 16 sts and 24 rows = 4”/10cm

 

SPECIAL TERMS

ssk: Slip next 2 sts knitwise onto right needle,  using left-hand needle insert the point into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together

6-st RC: Slip 3 sts to cn and hold to back, k3, k3 from cn.

STITCHES USED

Garter stitch

Stockinette stitch

Cable & Eyelet Pattern: (multiple of 11 sts)

Row 1(RS):  *K1, yo, k2tog, k4, ssk, yo, k2; rep from * to end.

Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl.

Row 3: *Yo, k2tog, k6, ssk, yo, k1;  rep from * to end.

Row 5: Rep Row 1.

Row 7: *Yo, k2tog, 6-st RC, ssk, yo, k1;  rep from * across.

Row 8: Purl

Rep Rows 1-8 for Cable & Eyelet pat.

 

NOTE

Stitch markers help to keep track of the repeats in the Cable & Eyelet pattern.

 

BACK

With smaller needles, cast on 77 (85, 91) sts.  Work in garter st for 4 rows. Change to larger needles.

Row 1: (RS) K11 (15, 7), pm, *work Row 1 of Eyelet & Cable pat on next 11 sts; rep from * to last 11 (15, 7) sts, k11 (15, 7).

Row 2: P11 (15, 7), *work Row 2 of Eyelet & Cable pat on next 11 sts; rep from * to last 11 (15, 7) sts, p11 (15, 7).

Rows 3-8: Work as est continuing Eyelet & Cable pat on center 55 (55, 77) sts. 

Work until piece measures 14 (14, 15)” from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape Armholes

Maintaining pat, bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st each edge every other row 3 times – 67 (75, 81) sts. 

Work even until armhole measures 7 (7 ½, 8)”, ending with a WS row.

Shape Shoulders

Bind off 9 (10, 10) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 8 (10, 12) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 33 (35, 37) sts. 

 

LEFT FRONT

With smaller needles, cast on 41 (45, 48) sts. Work in garter st for 4 rows. Change to larger needles.

Row 1 (RS): K11 (15, 7), pm, *work Row 1 of Eyelet & Cable pat on next 11 sts; rep from * 1 (1, 2) times more, pm, k3, pm, k5 (left front edge).

Row 2: K5, p3, *work Row 2 of Eyelet & Cable pat on next 11 sts; rep from * 1 (1, 2) times more,  p11 (15, 7).

Rows 3-8: Work as est continuing Eyelet & Cable pat. 

Work until piece measures 14 (14, 15)” from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape Armholes

(RS) Maintaining pat, bind off 2 sts at beg of row 

Dec 1 st at armhole edge every RS row 3 times – 36 (40, 43) sts.

Work even until armhole measures 4”, ending with a RS row. 

(WS) Work first 5 sts at front edge and place on a holder, then work rem sts in pat.

Shape Neck

Maintaining pat, bind off 8 sts at neck edge at beg of next WS row, then 2 (3, 4) sts at beg of next WS row. Dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 4 times – 17 (20, 22) sts. Work even until armhole measures same as back to shoulder, ending with a WS row.

Shaping Shoulder

Bind off 9 (10, 10) sts at beg of next RS row, then 8 (10, 12) sts at beg of next RS row.

 

RIGHT FRONT

Work as for Left Front, reversing shaping.

 

SLEEVES

With smaller needles cast on 52 sts. Work in garter st for 4 rows.  Change to larger needles.

Row 1 (RS): K4, *work Row 1 of Eyelet & Cable pat on next 11 sts; rep from * 3 more times, end k4.

Row 2: P4, *work Row 2 of Eyelet & Cable pat on next 11 sts; rep from * 3 more times, end p4.

Rows 3-8: Work as est continuing Eyelet & Cable pat; AT THE SAME TIME, inc 1 st each edge every 13th (7th, 5th) row 3 (5, 7) times, working new sts into the St st at beg and end of row – 58 (62, 66) sts. Work until piece measures 10 (11, 12)” from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape Cap

Maintaining pat, bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows. dec 1 st at each end every other row 3 (5, 7) times -- 48 sts.  Bind 3 sts at beg of next 8 rows. Bind off rem 24 sts.

 

FINISHING

Block pieces to measurements. Sew shoulder seams.  Set in sleeves. Sew sleeve and side seams.

 

HOOD

With larger needles and RS facing, beg at Right Front, k5 sts from holder, pick up and k 21 (23, 25) sts along Right Front neck edge, 33 (35, 37) sts along Back neck, 21 (23, 25) sts along Left Front neck edge, then k5 sts from Left Front edge holder – 85 (91, 97) sts.

Work in garter st until hood measures 11”.  Change to smaller needles. Work in garter st for 2” more. Bind off.

Using yarn needle, weave in all loose ends.

Button loops (make 6): With crochet hook, chain 8. Fasten off. 

Sew 6 buttons evenly spaced to Left Front with first one ½” from top neck edge and last one  ½” from bottom. Place crocheted button loops on Right Front opposite buttons, sewing the ends on WS.
