Caron International's Simply Soft® Collection (100% Acrylic): 7 oz (A) #0008 Autumn Maize (A); 6 oz #0007 Aqua Mist (C).

Caron International's Simply Soft® Paints (100% Acrylic): 8 oz #0001 Tapestry(B)

One size US I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook, or size to obtain gauge.

Yarn needle

GAUGE

In stitch pattern, 14 sts and 11 rows = 4"/10cm.

Gauge is not critical for this project.

STITCHES USED

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st)

SPECIAL TERMS

long-dc: Long double crochet —Yarn over, insert hook in indicated ch-space 2 rows below, yarn over and draw up a loop (to current row height), [yarn over and draw through two loops on hook] twice. Notes: Take care to draw up the loop to the current row height so that the stitch doesn't pull downwards. Do not work into the corresponding stitch in the current working row. Instead work over this stitch encasing it in the long stitch.

long V-st: Long V-stitch—(Long-dc, ch 1, long-dc) in indicated ch-space 2 rows below.

V-st: V-stitch—(Dc, ch 1, dc) in indicated ch-space.

COLOR SEQUENCE

Work *2 rows with A, 2 rows with B, 2 rows with A, 2 rows with C; repeat from * for Color Sequence.

NOTES

1. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over, yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook. Proceed with new color.

2. You may fasten off the old color each time you change colors. Or, carry colors not in use up side of blanket until needed again. Take care to cover carried strands when working the edging.

With A, ch 108.

Row 1 (RS): With A, sc in 2nd ch from hook, *sc in next ch, ch 1, sk next ch; repeat from * across to last 2 ch, sc in last 2 ch, turn—55 sc, and 52 ch-1 sp.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk next st, sc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * across to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in last sc; change to B in last st, turn—54 sc, and 53 ch-1 sp.

Note: When working long stitches (long-dc or long-V-st) work over the stitch into which you would usually work. The stitch into which you would usually work becomes "encased" inside the long stitches.

Row 3: With B, ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch 1), sk next ch-1 sp, *long V-st over next sc and into ch-1 sp 2 rows below, ch 1, sk next 2 ch-1 sps; repeat from * across to last sc, hdc in last sc, turn—26 long V-st.

Row 4: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), *V-st in ch-1 sp of next long V-st, ch 1; repeat from * across, dc in 3rd ch of turning ch; change to A in last st, turn—26 V-st.

Row 5: With A, ch 1, sc in first dc, long-dc over first ch-1 sp and into ch-1 sp 2 rows below, *ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp of next V-st, ch 1, long-dc over next ch-1 sp and into ch-1 sp 2 rows below; repeat from * across, sc in 2nd ch of turning ch, turn—27 long-dc.

Row 6: Repeat Row 2; change to C in last st, turn.

Rows 7–94: Continue to change color as in Color Sequence, and repeat Rows 3–6 (for a total of 94 rows). Do not fasten off.

Edging

Round 1:

Side 1: Working across last row of blanket, ch 3, 6 dc in first sc (corner shell made), *sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, sk next ch-1 sp, 7 dc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * across to last ch-1 sp, sc in last ch-1 sp, 7 dc in last sc (corner shell made).

Side 2: Working in ends of rows across side edge, sc in end of next B row, *7 sc in end of next A row, sc in end of next C row, 7 sc in end of next A row, sc in end of next B row; repeat from * across.

Side 3: Working across opposite side of foundation ch, 7 dc in first ch (corner shell made), sc in next ch-1 sp, sk next ch-1 sp, 7 dc in next ch-1 sp, *sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, sk next ch-1 sp, 7 dc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * across to last ch-1 sp, sc in last ch-1 sp, 7 dc in last ch (corner shell made).

Side 4: Working in ends of rows across side edge, work same as side 2; join with sl st in top of beginning ch. Fasten off.
