SPECIAL STITCHES

Cl: Cluster—3-dc in indicated stitch or space.

join-Cl: Join cluster (worked over 2 sts, one in current cluster pattern and one in center square)—Yarn over, insert hook in same stitch as last stitch made, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops remain on hook), insert hook in indicated stitch or space of center square, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.

 

SHAWL

Center Square

With A, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 1, 12 sc in ring; join with sl st in first sc, turn—12 sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc, turn—24 sc.

Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 2 dc in first sc, ch 2, [sk next 2 sc, 3 dc in next sc, ch 2] 7 times, sk last 2 sc; join with sl st in top of turning ch, turn—Eight 3-dc groups and 8 ch-2 sps.

Round 4: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout), sc in first ch-2 sp, hdc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc, *hdc in next dc, sc in next ch-sp, hdc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of turning ch, turn—8 sc, 16 hdc, and 24 dc. Fasten off A.

Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, sk next dc, 3 dc in top of turning ch (Cl), turn—2 clusters.

Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, Cl in sp between clusters, 2 dc in top of turning ch,  sk next 2 sts of center square, join-Cl in next st of center square, turn—3 clusters.

Row 4: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, Cl in each sp between clusters across to last cluster, Cl in top of turning ch, turn—4 clusters.

Row 5: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, Cl in each sp between clusters across to last cluster, 2 dc in top of turning ch, sk next 3 sts of center square, join-Cl in next st of center square, turn—5 clusters.

Rows 6–19: Repeat last 2 rows 7 times—19 clusters. Fasten off.

 

SECOND LOWER TRIANGLE

With WS facing, join C with sl st in corner ch-3 sp of center square, opposite corner ch-3 sp used for beginning of right lower shawl triangle. Work Rows 1-19 of first lower triangle.

 

UPPER SHAWL

With WS facing, join C with sl st in first dc of last row of lower triangle.

Row 1 (WS): Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc (beginning cluster made), Cl in each sp between clusters across to corner ch-3 sp of center square, Cl in corner ch-3 sp of center square, Cl in each remaining sp between clusters across to last cluster, Cl in top of turning ch, turn—39 clusters.

Rows 2–30: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, Cl in each sp between clusters across to last cluster, cluster in last dc—68 clusters, turn. Do not fasten off.

 

FIRST TOP TRIANGLE

Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, sc in first dc, ch 3, Cl in next 18 sps between clusters, (dc, hdc, sc) in next sp (ending cluster made), sl st in next dc, turn; leave remaining sts unworked—19 clusters and 1 dc.

Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in first sp between clusters (beginning cluster made), Cl in each sp between clusters across to sp between last cluster and turning ch, sk last sp, dc in top of turning ch, turn; leave sc unworked—18 clusters and 1 dc.

Row 3: Ch 3, sk sp between first dc and first cluster, Cl in each sp between clusters across to last sp between clusters, (dc, hdc, sc) in last sp between clusters, sl st in next dc, turn; leave remaining sts unworked—17 clusters and 1 dc.

Row 4: Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in first sp between clusters, Cl in each sp between clusters across to sp between last cluster and turning ch, sk last sp, dc in top of turning ch, turn—16 clusters and 1 dc.

Row 5–18: Repeat last 2 rows 14 times—2 clusters and 1 dc.

Row 19: Ch 3, sk sp between first dc and first cluster, (dc, hdc, sc) in next sp between clusters, sl st in next dc, turn; leave remaining sts unworked—1 cluster and 1 dc.

Row 20: Ch 3, sk cluster, dc in top of turning ch—2 dc. Fasten off.

 

SECOND TOP TRIANGLE

With RS facing, join C with sc in first dc of last row of upper shawl.

Row 1: Ch 3, Cl in next 18 sps between clusters, (dc, hdc, sc) in next sp between clusters, sl st in next dc—19 clusters and 1 dc.

Work Rows 2–20 of first top triangle. Fasten off.

 

FINISHING

Edging

With RS facing, join A with sl st in corner ch-3 sp of center square at lower tip of one of the lower triangles.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly spaced around outer edge of shawl to opposite corner ch-3 sp, working 3 sc in outer corners (at beginning of top triangles), and 5 sc at tip of each top triangle; leave edge of lower half of center square unworked. Fasten off.

Fringe

Fringe

Using B, cut 162 strands 16"/40.5cm long. Holding 2 strands together, fold fringe in half. With RS facing, *insert hook from WS to RS into first st of lower center square edge, pull through fold of strands (loop), insert ends into loop and pull tight against edge; repeat from *, working in each st of lower center square edge. Note: Attach 3 fringes in ch-3 sp at lower corner of center square. Comb out fringe and trim to 7"/18cm.

Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
