One size US I-9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook

or size to obtain gauge

GAUGE

Rounds 1–6 of back and front measure approximately 5 x 5"/12.5 x 12.5cm;

Pillow back and front each measure approximately 14 x 14"/35.5 x 35.5cm.

 

STITCHES USED

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st)

 

NOTE

To change color when joining a round; insert hook into first st of round, yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete join. Proceed with new color. Fasten off old color.

 

BACK

With A, ch 5; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 2 dc in ring, ch 1, [3 dc in ring, ch 1] 3 times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—Four 3-dc groups, and 4 ch-1 sps.

Round 2: Sl st in next 2 dc, [(sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-1 sp (corner made), ch 3] 4 times; join with sl st in first sc—4 corners, 4 ch-3 sps.

Round 3: (Sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in first corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, [(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp] 3 times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners, and four 3-dc groups.

Round 4: Sl st in next 2 dc, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in next corner ch-1 sp, ch 3, sc in next space between corner and next 3-dc group, ch 3, sc in next space between next 3-dc group and corner, ch 3; repeat from * 3 more times; join with sl st in first sc—4 corners, and 12 ch-3 sps.

Round 5: (Sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in first corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next 3 ch-3 sp, *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next 3 ch-3 sp; repeat from * 2 more times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners, and twelve 3-dc groups.

Note: In Round 6 and later rounds you are instructed to work a stitch in the space between 3-dc groups. These include the spaces between a corner 3-dc group and the next side 3-dc group.

Round 6: Sl st in next 2 dc, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in next corner ch-1 sp, ch 3, [sc in next space between 3-dc groups, ch 3] to next corner ch-1 sp; repeat from * 3 more times; join with sl st in first sc and change to B—4 corners, and 20 ch-3 sps.

Round 7: With B, (sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in first corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in each ch-3 sp across to next corner, *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in each ch-3 sp across to next corner; repeat from * 2 more times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—4 corners, and twenty 3-dc groups.

Round 8: With B, repeat Round 6—4 corners, and 28 ch-3 sps.

Rounds 9 and 10: With B, repeat Rounds 7 and 8; change to C in join of Round 10.

Rounds 11–16: With C, repeat Rounds 7 and 8 three times.

Round 17: With C, repeat Round 7. Fasten off.

FRONT

With C, ch 5; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Work same as back, working rounds in the following colors.

Rounds 1 and 2: Work with C; change to B in join of Round 2.

Rounds 3 and 4: Work with B; change to A in join of Round 4.

Rounds 5 and 6: Work with A; change to B in join of Round 6.

Rounds 7 and 8: Work with B; change to C in join of Round 8.

Rounds 9 and 10: Work with C; change to B in join of Round 10.

Rounds 11 and 12: Work with B; change to A in join of Round 12.

Rounds 13 and 14: Work with A; change to B in join of Round 14.

Rounds 15 and 16: Work with B; change to C in join of Round 16.

Round 17: Work with C. Fasten off.

 

FINISHING

Border

With WS of back and front together, join C with sc in edge.

Round 1 Working through both thicknesses, sc in evenly around, working 3 sc in each corner ch-1 sp; join with sl st in first sc. Insert pillow form before working across last side edge.

 

Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.
