MATERIALS

Caron International's Simply Soft® Paints (100% Acrylic):
#0005 Driftwood (C): 10 skeins

Caron International's Simply Soft (100% Acrylic, 6 oz/170g, 315 yd/288 m):
#9703 Bone (A):  3 skeins

#9750 Chocolate (B): 3 skeins

One size US I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook, or size to obtain gauge.

GAUGE
Using size US I/9 (5.5mm) hook, square = 6" x 6"

Gauge is not critical for this project.


STITCHES USED

Chain (ch)

Double Crochet (dc)

Single crochet (sc)

SPECIAL STITCHES

Corner (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc)

 

NOTES

Ch 3 at the beginning of round counts as dc

Ch 4 at beginning of round counts as (dc, ch-1)

Rounds 1, 2, and 3 are worked with RS facing.

SQUARE: make 72

Using color A,  ch 6; join with sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: (RS) Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 2, (3 dc in ring, ch 2) 3 times; join with sl st to top of starting ch 3 – (12 dc).

Rnd 2: Ch 4, * (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp (corner completed) ch 1, repeat from * 2 more times, (3 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in last ch-2 sp; join with sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch 4 – (24 dc). Fasten off color A.

Rnd 3: With (RS) facing, join color B in any corner. Ch 3, 2 dc in same corner, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next corner ch-2 sp – (18 dc). Turn.

Rnd 4: Ch 4, (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) 2 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 2 times, ch 1, dc in last st of 3 dc group – (20 dc). Turn.

Rnd 5: (RS) Ch 3, 2 dc in first ch-1 sp, ch 1 (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) 2 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times – (24 dc). Fasten off color B. Turn.

Rnd 6: Using color A, join yarn in first st. Ch 4, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 2 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times, ch 1, dc in last st of 3 dc group – (26 dc).  Fasten off color A. Turn.

Rnd 7: (RS) Using color C,  join yarn in first st. Ch 3,  2 dc in ch-1 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 4 times – (30 dc). Turn.

Rnd 8: Ch 4.  3 dc in next ch-1 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 4 times, ch 1, dc in last st of 3 dc group, ch 1 – (32 dc). Do not turn.

Rnd 9: 3 sc in corner sp, (19 sc evenly spaced across to next corner sp, 3 sc in corner sp) 3 times,  19 sc evenly spaced across to first sc, Join with sl st to first sc.

Fasten off color C.


FINISHING
Following diagram, sew squares together.

Border:

Rnd 1: Using color C, with (RS) facing,  join yarn in any sc st.  Sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc. Do not turn.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with sl st to first sc. Do not turn.

Rnd 3: repeat Rnd 2.

Fasten off. Weave in all ends.

Fringe: Using color B, cut 15" -16" lengths of yarn, fold in half and knot in corner points of squares as shown on diagram. Trim.
