STITCHES USED

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st)

SPECIAL STITCHES

FPdc: Front-post double crochet—Yarn over, insert hook from front to back and then to front again around post of stitch, yarn over and draw up loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] 2 times.

sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together—Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

NOTE

To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over; carry new color loosely up the side, yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete the stitch. Do not fasten off old color. Drop old color to back of work until next needed.

PANEL (make 5 – 3 in color sequence #1, and 2 in color sequence #2)

Color Sequence #1: B, A.

Color Sequence #2: A, B.

Row 1 (RS): With first color, ch 19; dc in 4th ch from hook (beginning ch counts as first dc) and in each ch across, turn—17 dc.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first 2 dc, *ch 3, sk next dc, sc in next 2 dc; repeat from * across; change to 2nd color in last st, turn—12 sc and 5 ch-3 sps.

Row 3: With 2nd color, ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, working behind ch-3 sp, 2 dc in skipped st of previous row, *sc2tog, 2 dc in next skipped st of previous row; repeat from * across to last 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts, turn—8 sc and 10 dc.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, insert hook between next 2 dc and through ch-3 sp of previous row, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (sc completed), *2 sc in next sc, insert hook between next 2 dc and through ch-3 sp of previous row, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (sc completed); repeat from * across to last 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts; change to first color in last st, turn—17 sc.

Row 5: With first color, ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in each st across, turn.

Rows 6–165: Repeat Rows 2–5 forty times.

Fasten off.

First Side Edging

Row 1 (RS): With RS facing and working in ends of rows across one long edge, join C with sc in end of first row, sc in end of each row across, turn—165 sc.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in each sc across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first dc, *FPdc around next st, sc in next st; repeat from * across. Fasten off.

Row 4 (RS): With RS facing, working in back loops only, join A with sc in first st, sc in each st across. Fasten off.

Row 5 (RS): With RS facing and B, repeat Row 4. Fasten off.

Second Side Edging

Working in ends of rows across opposite long edge, work same as first side edging.

FINISHING

Arrange panels with long edges together and alternating color sequence #1 panels with color sequence #2 panels. Using yarn needle and B, align stitches of last row of edging and whipstitch the long edges together, sewing through back loops only.

Border

Round 1 (RS): With RS facing, join C with sc in any corner of afghan, sc evenly spaced all the way around the outer edge, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc. Note: For best results work the 3-sc corners in the first and last st of Row 5 of edging on each long side edge of afghan.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in center sc of each 3-sc corner; join with sl st in first sc.

Fasten off.

Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
