GAUGE

SPECIAL TERMS

Fsc: Foundation single crochet (This technique creates a foundation chain and a row of single crochet stitches in one) –

Step 1:Place a slip knot on hook, ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop; yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"); yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (the "single crochet").

Step 2:Insert hook into the "chain" of the previous stitch and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"), yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (the "single crochet"). Repeat for the length of foundation.

FPdc: Front-post double crochet—Yarn over, insert hook from front to back and then to front again around post of stitch, yarn over and draw up loop, complete as dc.

sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together—Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

 

NOTES

1. Hoodie is worked in rounds from the lower edge up to the armholes. The piece is then divided for front and back, leaving openings for armholes.

2. Sleeves are worked directly into armholes after shoulder seams are sewn.

3. When instructed to work in the ends of rows, work around the post of the stitch at the end of the row.

 

BODY

Round 1 (RS): With A, Fsc 50 (56, 62, 68, 74); join with sl st in first st, turn—50 (56, 62, 68, 74) sts.

Rounds 2–17 (19, 21, 23, 25): Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc, turn.

Do not fasten off.

 

BACK

Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, sc in first 24 (27, 30, 33, 36) sts, turn; leave remaining sts unworked for armholes and front—24 (27, 30, 33, 36) sc.

Rows 2–11 (13, 15, 17, 19): Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Fasten off.           

 

FRONT

Note: One stitch is left unworked on each side of front, between front and back, for underarm.

Row 1: With WS facing, sk next unworked st of body following back, and join A with sc in next st, sc in next 23 (26, 29, 32, 35) sts, turn—24 (27, 30, 33, 36) sc.

Rows 2–7 (9, 11, 13, 15): Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Shape Neck and First Shoulder

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in first 12 (14, 15, 17, 18) sts, turn; leave remaining sts unworked for 2nd shoulder—12 (14, 15, 17, 18) sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each st across, turn—11 (13, 14, 16, 17) sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn—10 (12, 13, 15, 16) sc.

Row 4: Repeat Row 2—9 (11, 12, 14, 15) sc.

Fasten off.

Shape Neck and Second Shoulder

Sizes 6-9 months (2 years, 6 years) only

Row 1: With RS facing, join A with sc in first unworked st of front following first shoulder, sc in next 11 (14, 17) sts, turn—12 (15, 18) sts.

Sizes 12-18 months (4 years) only

Row 1: With RS facing, join A with sc in same st as last st of Row 1 of first shoulder, sc in next 13 (16) sts, turn—14 (17) sts.

All Sizes

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn—11 (13, 14, 16, 17) sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each st across, turn—10 (12, 13, 15, 16) sc.

Row 4: Repeat Row 2—9 (11, 12, 14, 15) sc.

Fasten off.

Seam Shoulders: With RS together, sew shoulder seams, beginning at side edge, and sewing only 7 sts together for shoulder. Repeat for second shoulder seam.

 

POCKET

Note: Pocket is worked from lower edge up to top edge.

Row 1: With A, Fsc 15 (16, 17, 18, 19), turn—15 (16, 17, 18, 19) sts.

Rows 2–6 (8, 10, 12, 14): Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 7 (9, 11, 13, 15): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn—13 (14, 15, 16, 17) sts.

Row 8 (10, 12, 14, 16): Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Last 6 (6, 6, 8, 8) Rows: Rep last 2 rows 3 (3, 3, 4, 4) more times—7 (8, 9, 8, 9) sts.

Fasten off.

Pocket Edging for Diagonal Side Edges

Row 1: With RS facing, working in ends of rows, join B with sc in end of first row at top of pocket, sc in end of next 8 (8, 8, 10, 10) rows across diagonal side edge of pocket, turn—9 (9, 9, 11, 11) sts.

Row 2: Ch 1, loosely sl st in each st across.

Fasten off. Repeat pocket edging across other diagonal side edge of pocket, beginning at lower edge of diagonal side edge and working up to top of pocket.

Pocket Edging for Straight Side Edges

Row 1: With RS facing, working in ends of rows, join A with sl st in end of first row at lower corner of pocket, sl st in end of each row up to diagonal pocket edging.

Fasten off. Repeat pocket edging across other straight side edge of pocket, beginning at diagonal side edge and working down to lower corner of pocket.

 

SLEEVE (work 2)

Round 1: With RS facing, join A with sc in skipped st at underarm, working in ends of rows, sc in end of each row around armhole; join with sl st in first sc, turn—23 (27, 31, 35, 39) sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc, turn.

Rounds 3 and 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc2tog, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc, turn—21 (25, 29, 33, 37) sts.

Rounds 5 and 6: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc, turn.

Rounds 7–14 (18, 18, 26, 30): Repeat Rounds 3–6, 2 (3, 3, 5, 6) more times—17 (19, 23, 23, 25) sts.

Round 15 (19, 19, 27, 31): Repeat Round 3 once more—16 (18, 22, 22, 24) sts.

Size 2 years only

Rounds 20 and 21: Repeat Round 3 twice more—20 sts.

All Sizes

Last Row: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.

Fasten off. Repeat around other armhole for 2nd sleeve.

 

HOOD

Row 1: With RS facing, join A with sc in first unworked st of front neck to work towards shoulder seam, sc in next 1 (3, 4, 6, 7) sts, sc in shoulder seam, mark sc just made, sc in each st across back neck, sc in 2nd shoulder seam, place marker in sc just made, sc in each st across to end of opposite front neck, turn—16 (23, 28, 35, 40) sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, *sc in each to across to 1 st before next marker, 2 sc in next st, sc in marked st, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * once more, sc in each st across, turn—20 (27, 32, 39, 44) sc. Note: Move markers up as work progresses.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Rows 4–11: Repeat last 2 rows 4 more times—36 (43, 48, 55, 60) sc.

Rows 12–15 (15, 15, 17, 17): Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Place a marker at center back neck.

Row 16 (16, 16, 18, 18): Ch 1, sc in each st across to 2 sts before next marker. sc2tog, sc in marked st, sc2tog, sc in each st across to 2 sts before next marker (sc2tog) twice, sc in each st across to 2 sts before next marker, sc2tog, sc in marked st, sc2tog, sc in each st across, turn—30 (37, 42, 49, 54) sts.

Row 17 (17, 17, 21, 21): Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 18 (18, 18, 22, 22): Rep Row 16 (16, 16, 18, 18)—24 (31, 36, 43, 48) sts.

Row 19 (19, 19, 23, 23): Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Next 2 Rows: Repeat last 2 rows once more.

Next 3 (3, 2, 2, 2) Rows: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Sizes 2 (4, 6) only

Remove first and third marker, leaving marker at back neck only.

Next Row: Ch 1, sc in each st across to 2 sts before next marker, (sc2tog) twice, sc in each st across—42 (46) sts.

Next Row: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

All Sizes

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Flatten hood, aligning sts of left and right top. Using yarn needle, sew top seam.

 

FINISHING

Seam Hood: With WS facing, fold last row of Hood in half and seam for top of Hood.

Attach Pocket: Center pocket over front of hoodie and sew in place.

Lower Ribbing

Round 1: With RS facing, work in "chains" at lower edge of Round 1 of body, join B with sc in any st, dc in next st, *sc in next st, dc in next st; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc, do NOT turn—50 (56, 62, 68, 74) sts.

Rounds 2–5: Ch 1, sc in first sc, FPdc around next dc, *sc in next sc, FPdc around next dc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc.

Fasten off.

Sleeve Ribbing

Round 1: With RS facing, join B with sc in any st of last round of sleeve, dc in next st, *sc in next st, dc in next st; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc, do NOT turn.

Rounds 2–5: Work same as Rows 2–5 of lower ribbing.

Fasten off.

Hood Ribbing

Round 1: With RS facing, join B with sl st in center front neck, working in ends of rows, sc in end of each row around hood opening, sl st in same sp as first sl st, do NOT turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, *dc in next st, sc in next st; repeat from * across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *FPdc around next dc, sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, loosely sl st in each st across.

Fasten off.
