Beg-BP3tog: Beginning back-post 3 stitches together—Ch 3, yarn over, insert hook from back to front and then to back again around post of next FPdc, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook); yarn over, insert hook in next ch-1 sp, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

BP3tog: Back-post 3 stitches together—Yarn over, insert hook in next ch-1 sp and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook); yarn over, insert hook from back to front and then to back again around post of next FPdc, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (3 loops on hook); yarn over, insert hook in next ch-1 sp, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

SQUARE (make 24)

With A, ch 5; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 1, 12 sc in ring; join with sl st in first sc, turn—12 sc.

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in same st as join, 2 dc in each sc around; join with sl st in top of turning ch, turn—24 dc.

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, ch 1, FPdc around next dc, ch 1, *2 dc in next dc, ch 1, FPdc around next dc, ch 1; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of turning ch, turn—12 FPdc, 24 dc and 24 ch-1 sp.

Round 4: Sl st in first ch-1 sp, beg-BP3tog, ch 3, *sk next 2 dc, BP3tog, ch 3; repeat from * around; join with sl st in beg-BP3tog, turn—12 BP3tog and 12 ch-3 sp.

Round 5: Ch 6, *sl st in next BP3tog, ch 6; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first ch—12 ch-6 sp. Fasten off.

Round 6: With RS facing, join B with sl st in any ch-6 sp, (beg-Cl, ch 2, Cl) in first ch-6 sp, ch 2, *(Cl, ch 2, Cl) in next ch-6 sp, ch 2; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first beg-Cl, turn—24 ch-2 sp.

Round 7: *Sl st in next ch-2 sp, ch 3; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sl st—24 ch-3 sp. Fasten off B.

Round 8: Draw up a loop of C in any ch-3 sp, ch 4 (counts as first tr), 2 tr in same ch-3 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, [3 hdc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1] 2 times, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, 3 tr in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, *3 tr in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, [3 hdc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1] 2 times, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, 3 tr in next ch-3 sp, ch 3; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch, turn—24 tr, 24 dc, 24 hdc, and 24 ch-sp.

Round 9: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), *(2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in next ch-3 sp, hdc in next st, [BPhdc around next st, hdc in next st, hdc in next ch-sp, hdc in next st] 5 times, BPhdc around next hdc, hdc in next st; repeat from * around, omitting last hdc; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—108 hdc and 4 ch-2 sp.

Fasten off.

 

FINISHING

Arrange squares in 3 rows of 8 squares each. With RS facing and B, whipstitch squares together through outer loops only, taking care to work 2 sts in ch-2 sps where 4 squares meet.

Edging

With RS facing, join A with sc in st before any outer corner ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner ch-2 sp, continue around entire outer edge, working into sts, as follows:

1. Sc in each hdc.

2. FPsc around each BPhdc.

3. Work (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner ch-2 sp.

4. In the 2 ch-2 sps where two squares meet, work sc in first ch-2 sp, sc2tog over same ch-2 sp and next ch-2 sp, sc again in 2nd ch-2 sp.

5. At end of round, join with sl st in first sc.

Fasten off.

Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. Block gently, if desired.
