STITCHES USED

Stockinette st (St st)

PATTERN STITCHES

Double Moss stitch (multiple of 4 sts):

Row 1: *K2, p2; rep from * across

Row 2: Knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts as they face you.

Row 3: *P2, k2; rep from * across.

Row 4: Rep Row 2.

Rep Rows 1–4 for Double Moss st.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

3-Needle Bind Off: Hold two double-pointed needles in left hand; with a third needle, k2tog (1 from front needle, 1 from back needle - 1 st on right-hand needle), *k2tog (2 sts on right-hand needle), bind off 1 st in usual manner; rep from * to end.

I-Cord: Using a double-pointed needle, cast on the number of sts indicated in instructions; DO NOT TURN.  *Slide sts to the opposite end of the needle and knit them, pulling yarn firmly behind sts; rep from * to desired length.  After a few rows, you will see that you are knitting a tiny tube; give it a gentle tug now and then to adjust any loose sts.  Bind off all sts, leaving a 12"/30.5cm tail for finishing.

NOTES

The purse is worked in rows beginning with smaller needles (for interfacing). Then the larger needles are used to complete the body of the purse.

Very little sewing is needed to assemble the purse. The bottom of the purse is closed with a 3-needle bind off. However, it can also be bound off and sewn, if desired. Only the side seam and handles need to be sewn.

PURSE

With larger straight needles, CO 64 sts. Change to smaller straight needles

Interfacing:

Row 1: Purl.

Row 2 (RS): Knit.

Rep last 2 rows 3 times.

Turning Row (WS): Change to larger needles, knit.

Body

Work in Double Moss st for 5 ½"/14cm (about 38 rows).

Next Row (RS): Sl 32 sts onto each of two dpns. Hold needles parallel (fold knitted piece) with WS tog and BO using 3-needle BO method. The BO edge forms the bottom seam. The folded edge forms one side. Sew the opposite side seam. Fold the interfacing to the inside of the purse and sew in place.

HANDLES (make 2)

With dpns, CO 5 sts. Make an 8"/20.5cm length of I-cord.

CLOSURE

With dpns, CO 3 sts. Make a 4 ½"/11.5cm length of I-cord (for loop).

Make one 1 ½"/4cm pompom (or use button).

FINISHING

Sew one handle 1"/2.5cm below top edge and 1"/2.5cm from side edges of front of purse. Sew other handle in same way to back of purse. Bring ends of smaller I-cord tog to form a loop. Sew the loop to center of top back edge (inside purse). Sew pompom or button to center of top front of purse, opposite loop. Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.
