GAUGE
In (ch 5, sc) pattern, 4 pattern repeats = 4 1/4"/17cm and 8 rows = 4"/10cm. Note: One repeat consists of one ch-5 sp and one sc.
Gauge is not critical for this project.
STITCHES USED
Chain (ch), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), slip stitch (sl st)
SPECIAL TECHNIQUE
Adjustable-ring method — Wrap yarn into a ring, ensuring that the tail falls behind the working yarn. Between finger and thumb, grip ring and tail firmly. Insert hook through center of ring, yarn over (with working yarn) and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through loop on hook (first chain stitch made). Work stitches of first round in the ring. After the first round of stitches is worked, pull gently, but firmly, on tail to tighten ring.
NOTES
1. Ponchette is worked in rounds, from the top down.
2. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color. Fasten off old color.
PONCHETTE
Beginning at neck edge, with A, ch 80 (88, 96). Taking care not to twist chain, join with sl st in first ch to form ring.
Round 1 (casing round): Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), sk next ch, *dc in next ch, ch 1, sk next ch; repeat from * around; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch—40 (44, 48) dc and 40 (44, 48) ch-1 sps.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, ch 4, *sc in next dc, ch 4; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc—40 (44, 48) ch-4 sps.
Round 3: Sl st in first ch-4 sp, *ch 5, sc in next ch-4 sp; repeat from * around working last sc in first ch-5 sp of this round.
Tip: To keep track of the beginning of rounds, place a stitch marker in the first ch-sp of next round. Move the marker up as each round is worked.
Rounds 4–10 (14, 18): *Ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp; repeat from * around ending with sc in first ch-5 sp; change to B in last st of Round 10 (14, 18). Fasten off A. Using dental floss threader of thin needle, thread 20 beads onto A, for use later in edging.
Rounds 11 (15, 19)-14 (20, 26): With B, repeat last round 4 (6, 8) times; change to A (with beads) in last st of Round 14 (20, 26). Fasten off B.
Edging and Fringe: With A, ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 20, slide bead up to hook, sl st in each of the 20 ch (beaded fringe made), sc in same ch-5 sp as last sc made, *[ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp] twice, ch 20, slide bead up to hook, sl st in each of the 20 ch, sc in same ch-5 sp as last sc made; repeat from * around, ch 5; join with sl st in sc at base of beginning ch-5— 20 (22, 24) beaded fringes. Fasten off.
DRAWSTRING
With B, make a 36 (40, 44)"/91.5 (101.5, 112)cm chain, leaving an 8"/20.5cm tail at each end.
Flower (make 2 – 1 each with A and B)
Make an adjustable ring.
Round 1: [Sc in ring, ch 7] 5 times; join with sl st in first sc—5 sc and 5 ch-7 sps. Pull gently but firmly on beginning tail to close ring. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Weave drawstring through casing round of ponchette.
Attach flowers to ends of drawstring: Using dental floss threader or thin needle, thread one bead onto one 8"/20.5cm tail. Thread tail through edge of one flower and draw back up through bead. Weave tail securely into drawstring. Repeat on other end of drawstring.
FINISHING
Using yarn needle, weave in any remaining ends.
