FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Caterpillar measures approximately 16"/40.5 cm long x 3"/7.5 cm tall (excluding antenna).

One size US G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook, or size to obtain gauge.

Gauge is not critical for this project.

STITCHES USED

Chain (ch), half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st)

 

SPECIAL TERMS

hdc2tog: Half double crochet 2 together—[Yarn over, insert hook in next st and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook.

sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together—Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

 

NOTE

Work tightly so that stuffing will not show through stitches.

 

HEAD AND BODY

With A, ch 2.

Round 1 (head): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join or turn; place a marker for beginning of round; move marker up as work progresses—6 sc.

Round 2: Sc in next 3 sc, 2 hdc in next 3 sc—9 sts.

Round 3: Sc in next 3 sts, [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st] 3 times—12 sts.

Round 4: Sc in next 3 sts, [hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st] 3 times—15 sts.

Round 5: Sc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next 8 sts, sc in next 2 sts—23 sts.

Round 6: Sc in next 3 sts, [sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st] twice, sc in next 4 sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts] twice—27 sts.

Round 7: 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, sc in next 18 sts, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts—31 sts.

Round 17: [Sc2tog, sc in next st] 9 times—18 sts. Sl st in next st. Fasten off.

Round 18 (2nd segment): Join B with sc in same sc as sl st just made, [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] 8 times, 2 sc in next st—27 sts.

Round 19: [Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] 9 times—36 sts.

Rounds 20–29: Sc in each st around.

Round 30: [Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog] 9 times—27 sts.

Round 69: Sc in next 2 sts, [sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts] 5 times, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts—30 sts.

Round 70: Sc in next 4 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in next 4 sts, [sc2tog, sc in next 5 sts] twice, sc2tog—27 sts.

Round 71: Sc in next st, sc2tog, hdc in next 9 sts, sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog—24 sts.

NOSE

With B, ch 2.

Round 1: Work 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook—5 sc.

Round 2: Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next 2 sc—7 sc. Sl st in next st.

Fasten off leaving an 8"/20.5cm tail for sewing.

 

ANTENNA (make 2)

With E, ch 2.

Round 1: Work 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook—5 sc.

Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around—10 sc.

Round 3: [Sc2tog] 5 times—5 sts.

Rounds 4–8: Sc in each st around. Sl st in next st.

Fasten off leaving an 8"/20.5cm tail for sewing. Flatten top (first 3 rounds) of antenna. With a separate piece of yarn sew through the top of the antenna, through the flattened area, and out the bottom of the flattened area, working around top of the antenna to sew it flat.

 

FINISHING

With D, embroider a mouth on Row 5 of face. Sew antenna to top of head over Rounds 11 and 12. Sew nose to tip of face. Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.
