TECHNIQUE USED: Crochet

 

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:

Frog measures approximately 7"/18cm long.

 

MATERIALS:

Caron International's Wintuk
(100% acrylic; 3oz/85g, 150yds/164m skein):
1 oz (A), small amounts of (B) and (C).

Shown in: #3251 Green (A), #3001 White (B), #3009 Black (C),

One size US H-8 (5mm) crochet hook, or size to obtain gauge.

Stitch markers

Polyester fiberfill

Yarn needle

 

GAUGE

Gauge is not critical for this project

STITCHES USED

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st).

 

SPECIAL TERMS

hdc2tog: Half double crochet 2 together (hdc decrease)—[Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook.

sc2tog: Singe crochet 2 together (sc decrease)—[Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

popcorn: Work 4 dc in indicated stitch, remove hook from loop and insert back into first dc of this 4-dc group; place dropped loop back and hook and draw through.

NOTES

1.Gauge is not critical for this project. However, work tightly so that stuffing will not show through the stitches.

2. Head and body are worked in continuous rounds, do not join and do not turn at the end of rounds. Place a marker to indicate the beginning of the round, and move marker up as work progresses.

 

HEAD AND BODY

With A, ch 2.

Round 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join and do not turn—6 sc.

Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around—12 sc.

Round 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times—18 sc.

Rounds 4 and 5: Sc in next 9 sts, hdc in next 9 sts.

Round 6: Sc in next 9 sts, [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st] 4 times, 2 hdc in last st—23 sts.

Round 7: Sc in next 9 sts, [hdc2tog, hdc in next st] 4 times, hdc2tog—18 sts.

Round 8: 2 hdc in first 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next 4 sts, sc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in last 2 sts—26 sts.

Round 9: 2 hdc in first 2 sts, sc in next 9 sts, 2 hdc in next 4 sts, sc in next 9 sts, 2 hdc in last 2 sts—34 sts.

Round 10: Sc in each st around.

Round 11: Sc2tog, sc in next 13 sts, [sc2tog] twice, sc in next 13 sts, sc2tog—30 sts.

Round 12: Sc in each st around.

Round 13: [Sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog] 5 times—25 sts.

Begin stuffing piece with fiberfill. Continue to stuff piece until complete.

Rounds 14–18: Sc in each st around.

Round 19: [Sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog] 5 times—20 sts.

Round 20: [Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts] 5 times—15 sts.

Round 21: [Sc in next st, sc2tog] 5 times—10 sts.

Round 22: [Sc2tog] 5 times—5 sts.

Work a sl st in the next st. Fasten off leaving a long tail. Use the long tail to sew opening closed.

 

FRONT LEG (make 2)

With A, ch 6.

Row 1: Popcorn in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, [ch 3, popcorn in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, sc in next ch of beginning ch-6] twice (3 "toes" made); working across opposite side of foundation ch, sc in next 4 ch, TURN.

Note: In next round, you will work in the front loops of the first 3 sc, then you will turn the piece to allow you to work in the free loops of the same 3 sc, forming a round (the base of the ankle).

Round 2: Ch 1, working in front loops only, sc in first 3 sc; turn, leave remaining sts unworked; working in unworked loops of same sts, work sc in same 3 sc—6 sc. Place a marker for the beginning of the round and move marker as work progresses.

Rounds 3–5: Sc in each sc around.

Round 6: [Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] twice—8 sc.

Round 7: Sc in each sc around.

Round 8: [Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] twice—10 sc.

Rounds 9 and 10: Sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 5 sts.

Work a sl st in the next st. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

BACK LEG (make 2)

Rounds 1–8: Work same as front leg through Round 8.

Round 9: [Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc] twice—12 sc.

Rounds 10 and 11: Sc in each sc around.

Round 12: [Sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog] twice—10 sc.

Round 13: Sc in each sc around.

Work a sl st in the next st. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

 

EYE (make 2)

With B, ch 2.

Round 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with sl st in first sc.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. With C, embroider a pupil onto each eye.

FINISHING

Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. Sew eyes to head over Rounds 6–8. Using photograph as a guide, sew front legs to body. Sew back legs to back of body. With C, embroider a straight stitch mouth and two nostrils.
